Spremberg - Spremberg

Spremberg Lower Sorbian: Grodk
no tourist info on Wikidata: Add tourist information

Spremberg (Lower Sorbian: Grodk) is a small town in the south of the state of Brandenburg, directly on the border with the state of Saxony. Spremberg was alternately owned by the House of Wettin, the Mark Brandenburg, the Kingdom of Bohemia and the Electorate of Saxony until 1815 by the Vienna Peace fell to Prussia. After 1952 it belonged to the district of Cottbus and since 1990 to the state of Brandenburg. Two branches of the Spree flow through the city center of Spremberg, so that the central city center area develops as a Spree island. Spremberg traditionally bears the nickname "Pearl of Lower Lusatia". At the end of the Second World War and the subsequent shortage economy in the GDR, this epithet appeared like a relic from times long past, because the destruction was too great and the damage that was still visible after years was too great. Since 1990 Spremberg has been developing again to what it has always been for its citizens despite all the inaccessibility, their pearl, Niederlausitz. Spremberg lies in a charming meadow landscape, but is also characterized by the fact that one of the largest opencast mines, the Welzow Süd opencast mine, is opening up west of the city due to the huge deposits of brown coal.

background

Spremberg was the geographical center of the German Empire from 1871 to 1920. The calculations for this went back to the geographer Heinrich Matzat, a senior teacher at the Spremberg high school. The basis of his calculation was that he determined the mean values of the places furthest north, south, east and west of the former German Empire. He published the result in the Annual report of the higher education institutions of the year 1872.

There it said: “At the end of these last discussions, which specifically concern local history, I would like to add a note here that will be of some interest to the residents of our good town Spremberg. - The northernmost point of the newly created German Empire is near the village Gluttonous in the north of Memel, 55 degrees 52 minutes 56 seconds north latitude; the southernmost at the origin of the Stillach, a source river of the Iller in the Allgäu Alps, 47 degrees 15 minutes 48 seconds north latitude. The mean of this is 51 degrees 34 minutes 22 seconds. The easternmost point is near the village Schilleningken not far Schirwindt at the Scale, 40 degrees 32 minutes 25 seconds east longitude from Ferro; the westernmost near the village Isenbruch, four kilometers from the Meuse, 23 degrees 31 minutes 50 seconds east longitude of Ferro. The mean of this is 32 degrees 2 minutes 7.5 seconds. The geographical center of the German Reich is therefore the point which is below 51 degrees 34 minutes 22 seconds north latitude and 32 degrees 2 minutes 7.5 seconds east longitude. But this point is located on the territory of the city of Spremberg. You can get to it (as measured on the general staff map, if you walk almost exactly 500 paces (and two feet) from Dresdener Strasse down Gartenstrasse and the path that continues. "

Center of the German Empire 1871-1920

In July 1914, the head of the Prussian Land Survey issued a decree that the center of the German Empire fell on Mes table sheet 2547, i.e. the district of Spremberg.

In 1946, the inscription on the stone was destroyed by order of the then district administrator, who implemented Order No. 30 of the Allied Control Council to the letter.

The original stone was recovered in March 1988 during the preparation of road construction works and is exhibited in the local history museum in Spremberg. On January 19, 1991, a copy of the stone was set up just a few meters from the original location.

In the city of Spremberg there are no signs or boards that show the way to the center stone! 1 The stone is located at the intersection of Gartenstrasse / Mittelstrasse / Lassoberg. Coming from Cottbus, turn left about 100 meters after the Shell petrol station and reach the stone after about 300 meters. Coming from Graustein, Bad Muskau, take the 2nd exit at the roundabout after Spremberg Castle and follow the main road. When you reach the roundabout at the bus station, take the second exit in the direction of the city center and shortly afterwards drive through the now third roundabout, also at the second exit into Gartenstrasse. There you will reach the intersection Mittelstraße / Lassoberg after approx. 300 meters and you will see the center stone on the left.

  • The 6 Cavalier House is a building built in 1706 in the baroque style, which was built for his guests at the behest of Duke Heinrich von Sachsen-Merseburg and used for this purpose until his death in 1738. The Kavalierhaus was extensively renovated in the years 1994-1997 and is currently used by the Sparkasse as a branch of the Sparkasse Spree-Neisse. A tour of the house is not possible, as it is firstly a sensitive area of the Sparkasse and, above all, “only” a new building behind an old facade.
  • 7 Bull angle is a place opposite the Kavalierhaus, on which the so-called city bull was tied up in earlier times. In 1995, following this story, but without any actual historical model, a field stone fountain with three large bulls' heads was built. As a special gag, a connection for a beer dispenser has been incorporated into the nostrils of one of these bulls' heads, so that free beer can be tapped there on special occasions.
  • The 8 Burglehnhaus in the Langen Straße 31, located directly on the Bullwinkel, is the last of the five former burglehn houses in the city. The building itself was built in 1706 and is now used as a residential and commercial building. Viewing is not possible.
  • The 9 Post office building one of the most beautiful and distinctive buildings in the city. It was built from 1882-1883 and has been used as a post office ever since. A special architectural feature is the telegraph tower built in 1890, which is one of the few preserved of its kind in Germany. Unfortunately, a visit is not possible here either.
  • The 10 city Park is a large park on the Georgenberg in the immediate vicinity of the old town center. It can be reached comfortably on foot via the winding stairs and paths laid out on the slopes of the Georgenberg, as well as via the public transport area. Since July 2014, access from Bahnhofstrasse has been via the colloquial 1 Ladder to heaven possible again. This access had been blocked for several months for security reasons, because landslides had occurred in this area below the former Heroes Memorial.
Entrance portal Georgenbergfriedhof

The origins of the city park go back to the year 1828, when the city cemetery was built in front of the city gates. After storm damage in 1968, it was decided to remove the previously closed cemetery and to found the current city park on it. In the city park there are also several central memorials of the city, as well as a Soviet and German military cemetery. At the western tip of the city park one has of the so-called 1 bastion from, the former location of the memorial for the victims of the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-1871, a fantastic view of the roofs of the town of Spremberg. At this point, the war memorial that had actually been believed to be lost was found again in March 2018. According to the resolution of the city, this monument is to be rebuilt at the original location.

If you go back the path from the bastion on the left, directly on the slope of the Old Georgenberg, you can see after about 150 meters below this path, which was newly built in December 2017 11 Entrance portal of the old GeorgenbergfriedhofEingangsportal Georgenbergfriedhof in der Enzyklopädie WikipediaEingangsportal Georgenbergfriedhof (Q47004095) in der Datenbank Wikidata. It consists of two simple columns, which are connected by a banner with the inscription "RUHESTÄETTE". On the pillars there are panels with the statements “What you are now, we were” (left) and on the right “What we are now, you will”.

Immediately next to the Bismarck Tower, a lapidarium is being built in which historically valuable gravestones will be placed. The central point of this lapidarium is the fountain in the form of a flower, designed by a sculptor from Spremberg. Not far from the Lapidarium is also the singer's view, which was only rebuilt in 2014 by a local association and only from donations. Unfortunately, the lines of sight into the city are still not cleared even after months of completion.

Brown Spree

Navi checkpoint at the Saebisch fountain

For visitors to Spremberg, the sight of the Spree can arouse astonishment or even amazement, because the water of the Spree is extremely brown and ocher. The reasons for this are the minerals marcasite and pyrite stored in the soil layers, which now come into contact with air in the post-mining landscape. As a result, iron hydroxide and sulfate are formed, which are then washed out with the rising groundwater and "pushed" towards the Spree.

Navi checkpoint

On the occasion of the Brandenburg Day in July 2014, a calibrated control point for navigation systems by the state surveying and geographic base information Brandenburg (LGB) was installed in the ground on the Kleiner Markt in Spremberg, to the right of the community center, right next to the Saebisch Brunnen. This checkpoint is the second that was set in the state of Brandenburg.

activities

For sporting activities, bowling should be mentioned in the first place.

  • The is located directly on the market square in the basement of the City Center Citybowling Spremberg, which is also SKY Sportsbar.

A little away from the city center, in the Trattendorf district, is located

  • Wilhelm's smithy room, rather a small restaurant with an attached bowling facility, so you should definitely make a reservation in advance.
  • Smithy, Kraftwerkstrasse 36. Tel.: 49(0)3563-93601.
  • There are a limited number of parking spaces in front of the building. You can get there by public transport with line 872 and then get off at the school (Trattendorf). The smithy room is then directly opposite the stop.

But there are many other sporting activities. Canoeing and judo sports are very active and well-known nationwide in Spremberg. There are several football clubs, and volleyball, tennis and billiards are also played in various clubs. Not to be forgotten are the anglers, the marksmen and even archery is possible here.

Events

Spremberg celebrates every second weekend in August Heimatfest. The first events take place on Friday, the main day of the event is Saturday.

  • At 10:00 p.m. high-altitude fireworks at the Schwanenteich. To find a good place on the slopes of the 12 To get hold of swan ponds, the saying "Arriving early ensures good seats" applies here. During the time of the Heimatfest, large parts of the city center are closed to vehicle traffic.
  • 1  Spremberg open-air theater. The stage was rebuilt in 2011. Parking facilities, see Georgenstrasse car park.

shop

Spremberg as a small town does not have the large houses of the trading groups, but is nevertheless well positioned with a mixed range of regional retailers. All well-known discounters are also represented, mostly in the extended city center. The largest shopping market in the city is in the southwest towards Hoyerswerda located on the B 156 1 Kaufland.

In order not to unnecessarily burden the cityscape with type houses of the respective retail group, a consensus with the respective users has gone over to either integrating large retail chains into existing old buildings that are worth preserving or then designing the buildings in such a way that the overall image of the city is not unnecessary The former are very successful examples of this 2 "Pappenfabrik Nitschke" on Berliner Strasse, corner of Zeppelinstrasse and the former. 3 "Vordruckverlag Spremberg" on Geschwister-Scholl-Strasse opposite the bus station.

Spremberg souvenirs are best bought at the tourist information center at the market. The selection has improved a lot in the last few months, so everyone should find something suitable here. Anyone looking for a high-proof souvenir, such as the Spremberger "Lauermannlikör" (herbal liqueur), is at 4 "Gässners Weinhandlung" Lange Straße 9 is right. For ceramics or dishes with Spremberger motifs you should use Hartmanns 5 Visit the "House of Gifts" at Dresdener Strasse 10.

kitchen

Spremberg does not have its own formative kitchen, but it does have some culinary specialties, which are due, among other things, to the proximity of the Spreewald.

Lusatian delicacies
Potatoes and cottage cheese with linseed oil
  • Quark with linseed oil, one of the regional delicacies, some of which are also offered in restaurants. It's worth asking! Quark is served normally, seasoned with salt and pepper and then mixed with a good portion of freshly squeezed linseed oil. You can add chopped onions and / or chopped chives to the quark. Boiled potatoes are served with it.
  • Grützwurst with sauerkraut should be tried when in Spremberg. Simply warm the grützwurst in water, serve sauerkraut as you like, with mashed potatoes (mashed potatoes) - done. The Kadach butcher's shop in Forster Straße (from the market square approx. 100 m to the north) is highly recommended. Grützwurst can also be served in the pan.
