Route profile

On the Spree near Schmogrow
  • Waypoints
  • Length: 250 km long circular route
  • Signposting: The path is completely signposted. A smiling cucumber riding a bicycle serves as a symbol. Sometimes the signage is a bit confusing and does not match the maps. Abbreviations are also signposted as a normal route. The route may also have been changed. A card is useful when driving.
  • Slopes: The circular route leads through the Spreewald and has few notable inclines. Only the Wehlaberg in the north of the circular route near Krausnick offers a real incline.
  • Path condition: The cycle path is consistently quite easy to drive on. But unpaved between Krausnick and Köthen.
  • Traffic load: In the core of the Spreewald, the Gurkenradweg consists of separate cycle paths. In inner city areas it also leads on normal roads. The northern loop leads on normal country roads which are, however, only moderately used.
  • Suitable bike: Tours / cross / fitness bike
  • Family suitability: Separate route guidance, public transport connections and many points to linger make the southern loop through the Spreewald between Lübben and Cottbus ideal for a family excursion.
  • Inline suitability: Only some of the paths (which lead on separate paths) are suitable for inline skating. A large part of the Gurkenradweg, however, is not.

background

In addition to the cucumbers as a classic product of the region, the cycle path also focuses on the culture of the local Sorbs and Wends. The path also leads through the UNESCO-protected Spreewald biosphere reserve. There are interesting points along the way, such as the Dissen local history museum and the cucumber museum in Lübbenau-Lehde.

Route description with sights

Cottbus - Burg (Spreewald)

The cycle path starts in Cottbus in the Pushkin Park in the city center. You leave the city via the Fehrower Weg, north of the airfield and touch the district of Sielow. After a nice long drive through the forest you reach the old Spreewald train station in Sielow. This is one of the most popular cycling and skating routes in the region and is therefore quite busy. Past Guhrow to Werben, the route runs parallel to the main road behind the town of Werben, along fruit trees over the fields of the foreland of the Spreewald region. Finally you reach the entrance gate to the beautiful Spreewald castle.

Burg (Spreewald) - Vetschau - Lübbenau

Lübbenau - Lübben

Lübben - Golßen

From Lübben, the cycle path leads separately alongside the country road over wide fields to the less spectacular town of Lubolz. In the center of the village, follow the street to the left to the train station. If you want, you can turn right behind the train station and drive directly to Schönwalde and shorten the western curve of the course. From here it continues on a very quiet country road past the Rickshausen, which consists of only two farms, on the B155 to Niewitz. Those who are out and about during harvest time in summer (July, August) can see the harvesting machines called "cucumber fliers" at work in the fields near Niewitz. The place itself is quite sleepy. At the entrance to the village there is a small, nice-looking church. The road that continues to Schiebsdorf is very quiet with little traffic. The next place is Kasel-Golzig. He made a detour to just a few kilometers away Luckau want to do, follow this here Niederlausitzer Radweg: pulling the cranes. It goes over wide fields on an asphalted path that is open to traffic but rarely used to Zützen. The following way over the sleepy Sagritz to Golßen is quite charming, especially in the summer months.

Golßen - Leibsch

Due to the expansion of the cycle path shortly after Golßen, the course of the Gurken cycle path has changed for the first two kilometers. If you like, you can also follow the old path along the unpaved field path and meet the new bike path a little later. We continue on a quiet forest path to Rietzneuendorf-Staakow. Drivers who are very fast should be careful. On the way there are small bumpers in some places. However, these are not marked in color. If you don't want to make a small jump without warning, you have to drive very carefully in this area. After Rietzneuendorf the path follows a rather boring country road to Waldow. The next section to Schönwalde is contradictory. Maps show a course on forest paths. The signs on site follow the road. From the motorway bridge you have a view over the fields with the wind turbines and the "Tropical Island" in the largest self-supporting hall in the world. From Schönwalde it goes on the long straight country road to Krausnick. Here an off-road section is rated on the cyclist. It goes up the Wehlaberg on field and forest paths. There is a 28 meter high observation tower on the mountain. Here you have a wonderful view of the Märkische Heide. On the way down the mountain you pass the three idyllic heather lakes and follow the path to Köthen. Here you can take a break at Lake Koethen. Passing the boat ferry port of Groß Wasserburg, the route continues to Leibsch at the northern end of the Spreewald. There is also a restaurant and a bicycle workshop here.
