background
The Westlausitzer Bergland extends from the Elbe in the west to the Upper Lusatia in the East. In the north the region is through the Königsbrück-Ruhlander Heiden and in the south by the Saxon Switzerland limited. In the northwest, the Großenhainer Pflege borders on the natural area. The rolling hills represent a foothill of the Sudeten Mountains represent.
The region is largely agricultural, but it also has once wealthy cities such as Kamenz or Bischofswerda. These were located on medieval trading routes such as the Via Regia, which led from Breslau to Leipzig. They brought prosperity and wealth to the citizens of the cities. As a free city, Kamenz was also able to develop political power, as it was, for example, a founding member of the Upper Lusatian Six Cities Association, which was to shape the region for 500 years.
