Radebeul is a suburb of Dresden, located between Meissen and the state capital. The city is known for its vineyards, its old town center and villas, as well as its most famous former resident: Karl May.

background

Spitzhaus

The villa suburb consists of a lower and an upper part, with the lower part being connected to Dresden's urban tram system with line 4. The place with the Saxon vineyards and the well-known Spitzhaus as an excursion destination is known by Karl May (the "father" of "Winnetou" and "Old Shatterhand") and has so far successfully resisted incorporation into Dresden.

There is some important industry on the Elbe and it is not far to the Dresden chip factories Moritzburg and smaller towns such as Weinböhla and the Dresdner Heide, Dresden's largest forest in the city. This location has led to Radebeul becoming the richest city in East Germany, even some princes and industrialists from West Germany have already looked for and found their new main place of residence here. The unemployment rate is one of the lowest in eastern Germany.

trips

Moritzburg Castle

In addition to Dresden, there are the following destinations in the area (distance information from Meißner Straße / Paradiesstraße junction):

  • Coswig (6 km northwest, "Saxon Wine Route") - located between Radebeul and Meißen and at the intersection of two long-distance railways; Old Church and Karrasburg Museum.
  • Moritzburg (10 km north, over the Lößnitzgrund) - if you don't want to drive, you can use the little train here. You have to walk a bit from the train station, but the Moritzburg hunting lodge is definitely worth it.
  • Weinböhla (11 km northwest, via Coswig) - state-approved resort between the two parallel long-distance railway lines to Leipzig and Berlin.
  • Meissen (17 km northwest, via Coswig and then along the banks of the Elbe) - Meißen is a figurehead. In addition to the typical city skyline with the cathedral and Albrechtsburg castle, a visit to the porcelain factory is also worthwhile.
