Pirna has always been an important place for culture and industry in the region. As the "gateway to Saxon Switzerland", the city is the administrative center, but also home to many smaller industrial companies.

Geographically, Pirna is in Elbe valley basin, but in terms of tourism the city belongs to Saxon Switzerland. The "Saxon Switzerland" tourism association has its headquarters here.

history

Pirna was mentioned for the first time in 1233 in a document from Bishop Heinrich von Meißen and received town charter in 1245. In 1293 the Bishop of Meissen sold the city to King Wenceslaus II of Bohemia. At the beginning of the 14th century, Pirna was granted stacking rights, making it an important trading town on the Upper Elbe. After the city was conquered by Margrave Friedrich II of Meißen, Pirna was again under the rule of Margrave Meißen from 1405. In the summer of 1501 the city was ravaged by severe flooding. In 1634 peace negotiations took place in Pirna, which later lead to the Peace of Prague. In April 1639 the city was captured by the Swedish troops under Marshal Banér in the course of the 30 Years War. Over 600 citizens were killed. Today this is known as "Pirn's misery". Before the Swedes left the city, they wanted to burn the entire city down. The pharmacist Theophilus Jacobäer was able to prevent the complete destruction. Between 1752 and 1755 Bernardo Bellotto (Canaletto) painted 11 views on behalf of Elector August II. Pirna. During the Seven Years' War the Sonnenstein fortress was taken first by the Prussian troops and later by the Austrian ones. In September 1813 French troops occupied the fortress, during which time Napoléon lived for a few days at the market in Pirna. In addition, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe visited the city in the same year. The hitherto heaviest flood flooded the city in 1845 and reached its highest level at 8.77 meters. In 1848 Richard Wagner visited Graupa and was inspired by his work on the opera "Lohengrin".

In the age of industrialization, Pirna was connected to the railway network. Furthermore, several factories settled in the city. Around 750 people lost their lives in the First World War. By 1932, unemployment had risen to 18%. During the Second World War, around 15,000 mostly mentally handicapped people were gassed in the Sonnenstein sanatorium as part of the Action T4 euthanasia program. In addition, almost 3,500 people from Pirna died during the war. 203 people were killed in a bomb attack on April 19, 1945. The Elbe bridge and the train station were also destroyed. In 1957 the city was flooded again. Further floods followed in 2002 with 10.58 meters and in 2013 with 9.67 meters.
