Hinterhermsdorf is a village in the Saxon Switzerland on the border to Czech Republic, it belongs to the city Sebnitz. The place is in the national park Saxon Switzerland National Park and near the national park Bohemian Switzerland, it is a popular tourist destination.

background

The origins of the village development can be traced back to the timber industry and the transport of the felled timber Bad Schandau, Dresden and Meissen. What is left of it today are the so-called Upper and Lower Locks on the Kirnitzsch River, which runs past the village to the east and south. The river is also the border with the Czech Republic. Both locks are now technical monuments and no longer in operation. In the area of the upper lock, however, the tradition of a boat trip on an artificially dammed lake has been preserved.

Architecturally noteworthy are the half-timbered houses that have been preserved in Hinterhermsdorf and are typical of the region. 71 such buildings have been preserved in the village, 61 of which are listed. Half-timbered houses usually consist of at least two independent structures. A so-called block room within or as part of the building has its own foundation with walls and ceiling. That’s why a stud frame was built, it ties around the block room mostly in half-timbered construction.
