The town Děčín (Eng. Tetschen) is on the southern edge of the Bohemian Switzerland and on both sides of the Elbe. This closes south of the city Central Bohemian Uplands at.

background

Today's city is made up of the Tetschen district on the right of the Elbe and the Bodenbach on the left (Podmokly). Tetschen was built in the late Middle Ages around a castle that was located on a 40 meter high cliff (now Thun's Castle) and protected an Elbe crossing. Bodenbach only came into being with the Dresden-Prague railway, which runs on the left bank of the Elbe and overtook Tetschen in population at the end of the 19th century. The administrative unification of the two cities did not come about until the Nazi rule in 1942 and was not reversed by the communists a few years later; it still exists today. Although hardly destroyed in the war, the historical center of Tetschen was largely leveled in the 1950s and replaced by less attractive block developments. Bodenbach largely retained its Wilhelminian style.

Today, Tetschen is an industrial city and a traffic junction for various railway lines and a goods transfer point as one of the largest inland ports in the Czech Republic.

trips

Beautiful parts of the lovely surroundings are the Schneeberg to the north-west (Děčínský Sněžník, 723 m), the highest point of the North Bohemian sandstone mountains, with a magnificent view, and Tyssa walls (Tiské Stěny), wildly rugged sandstone formations, then the one that begins north of the Elbe Saxon Switzerland. The next places worth seeing and visiting in the area are:

  • Hřensko, German Herrenkrretschen (12 km north, trunk road 62) - directly on the German border on the right bank of the Elbe, a place for excursions and shopping in the Bohemian Switzerland. At 112.5 m, Hřensko is the deepest place in the whole of the Czech Republic. That is only a few kilometers Prebischtor away, the largest natural sandstone rock bridge in Europe.
  • Labská Stráň, German Elbleiten (13 km north) - village in the middle of the Elbe Sandstone Mountains above the right bank of the Elbe; near the Belvedere viewpoint. You cannot get to Labská Stráň via the road on the banks of the Elbe, but via Ludvikovice and Arnolice (German Arnsdorf) further east.
  • Jetřichovice, German Dittersbach (19 km northeast, trunk road 13 to Huntírov, turn left there) - village on the southern edge of the national park with traditional glass blowing.
  • Ústí nad Labem, German Aussig (25 km to the south-west, trunk road 261 on the east bank of the Elbe or trunk road 62 on the west bank of the Elbe) - The industrial city of Ústí is by far the largest city and administrative seat in north-west Bohemia and is located upstream of the Elbe.
