Melnik (German: Melnik) is a city in the region Central Bohemia in Czech Republic. The city is located around 35 km north of the capital Prague.
background
Already inhabited in the Neolithic Age, Mělník, with its center and the former castle, is around 80 meters higher than the confluence of the Elbe and Vltava rivers (which is wider and richer in water here). This gives beautiful views over the river mouth. The city is considered to be the most important wine-growing center in Bohemia, but that is relative, because Bohemian wine-growing is rather insignificant compared to that in South Moravia (see Viticulture in the Czech RepublicThe city has around 19,500 inhabitants (2019).
