background

The north Bohemian city of Leitmeritz is located in the Aussiger region. It goes back to a collegiate monastery of St. Stephan founded in 1057, received town charter around 1225 and has been the seat of the Catholic diocese of Leitmeritz since 1655.

In 1938 it was annexed with the Sudetenland by the German Reich and the seat of the Higher Regional Court for this area. It gained sad notoriety through the nearby Theresienstadt concentration camp, which was a few kilometers south on the territory of the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia. After 1945 the German-speaking part of the population was expelled.

The beautiful old town has been a listed building since the 1970s.
