Tourist Attractions

Marketplace

Immediately south of the city is found with the Stolpen castle ruins the main tourist destination. The castle was first mentioned in the 11th century. In 1675 it was expanded into a fortress, but at the beginning of the Seven Years' War it was razed by the Prussian army and made unusable. After that, the castle fell into disrepair until it was discovered for tourism in the 19th century. The disgraced mistress of Augustus the Strong, Countess Cosel, lived in the castle until her death. She was undoubtedly one of the most beautiful and witty women of her time, highly educated and especially well versed in French literature, which gave her almost the only pleasure in her captivity. The round tower of the castle is named Coselturm.
