The historic residential town and today's district town Torgau lies on the west bank of the Elbe and on the southeastern foothills of the Dübener Heide.

By plane
The closest commercial airport is the Leipzig / Halle Airport
(IATA: LEJ). You should expect an hour and a half to two hours by train (change in Leipzig Hbf), it is a little faster by car. The Berlin Brandenburg Airport(IATA: BER) is about three hours away.

Torgau is located on the following federal highways, far away from motorways:

The next motorway exit is Leipzig Nordost on the A14, about 50 km away.
By train
Torgau is located on the railway line from Leipzig to Cottbus and is served by regional express trains and Leipzig S-Bahn trains. The 1 Torgau station is about 1 km northwest of the city center; It is one and a half kilometers to Hartenfels Castle.

Hartenfels Castle
- 1 Hartenfels Castle, Schlossstrasse 27, 04860 Torgau.
, located on an eponymous rock on the Elbe. In its current form, it was created between 1483 and 1622 in the style of the early Renaissance. After the partition of Saxony in 1483, it served as the residence of the Ernestine electors, since Dresden and Meißen had fallen to the cousins of the Albertine line. When Torgau passed to the Albertine line in 1547, the town and castle lost their importance. The castle was still a widow's seat, later an administrative location, prison, etc. Today it houses the district administration, museum and exhibition rooms.
2 Castle Church. Integrated into Hartenfels Castle, this church building, completed in 1544 and consecrated personally by Luther on October 5 of the same year, is the first new Protestant church in the world. Simple renaissance style without too many frills.
3 Elbe bridge Right next to the castle is the remnant of the Elbe bridge, which was still standing when Russian and American troops met here in April 1945 (for the cameras). Decrepit after the GDR era, the bridge was blown up in an attack of historical oblivion in 1992; only the westernmost bridge pillar remained. That too 4 Monument to the encounter was allowed to stay.

From 1943 to 1945, Torgau was the seat of the Reich Court Martial, which, like later the Soviet occupying power, was the location of prison in the Fort Zinna to the west of the city and bridgehead (on the eastern bank of the Elbe), used and carried out executions there. Fort Zinna is still a prison today, so the memorial with an exhibition is housed in the castle.Open: daily 10-18.Price: free entry.
