Eilenburg is a small town in the Leipzig lowland bay east of Leipzig. The hollow flows through the place.

background

Market square with town hall and Nikolaikirche

Eilenburg, in a strategically favorable location at the junction of the medieval trade route Via Regia over the Mulde, was already in 961, when the castle (Ilburg) was first mentioned in a document, owned by the Wettins. It is therefore considered to be the nucleus of today's Saxony. In 1815 Eilenburg fell to Prussia, in 1952 to the Leipzig district and thus back to Saxony in 1990. The city suffered massive destruction in World War II.

From the Sorbenturm of the castle you have a good view over the city and the Mulde valley.
