The Leipzig lowland bay is in the northwest of Saxony. The area around Leipzig is mainly characterized by the New Lakeland shaped, numerous, meanwhile flooded former brown coal opencast mines. The area also extends to the south of the neighboring country Saxony-Anhalt into (seeCentral German chemistry triangle).

- 8 Markranstädt - the Kulkwitzer See (water sports!) separates the city from Leipzig; the Altranstädter Schloss was the political center of Northern Europe from 1706 to 1707.
- 9 Pegau - Small town on the White Elster; St. Laurentius Church with Romanesque Wiprecht cenotaph and Renaissance town hall (same master builder as in Leipzig).
- 10 Schkeuditz - the Elster-Luppe-Aue and lakes form an attractive contrast to the airport and the oldest motorway junction in Europe.
- 11 Zwenkau - at Zwenkauer See, the largest in the Leipzig region; the history of lignite becomes clear at Cape Zwenkau.

The Leipzig lowland bay is the southernmost region of the north German lowlands. Characteristic is the lignite mining, which is in decline today, and the resulting post-mining landscape with birch forests and countless lakes. Recultivated areas are given a new role as recreational areas such as the Leipziger Neuseenland, especially in the south and north of the city.

- The Leipzig lowland bay is from the direction Munich and Berlin Accessible via the A 9. From northwest Germany and Dresden the A 14 leads into the region. The A 38 from North Hesse crosses on Cross Rippachtal the A 9, bypasses Leipzig south and meets east at Triangle Parthenaue on the A 14.
- Leipzig is an ICE stop with direct connections from / to Berlin, Hamburg, Frankfurt am Main, Interlaken, Dresden and Munich. There are also IC connections after Magdeburg, Cologne, Wiesbaden, Berlin, Dresden and Prague,
- Leipzig and Leipzig Airport are stops for various long-distance bus routes.

In December 2013, the city tunnel in Leipzig was put into operation for rail traffic and at the same time local rail traffic in the region was redesigned. The five lines of the Central German S-Bahn network with stations in many places in the region are all geared towards the city of Leipzig. In the foreseeable future and also interesting for tourists, the region will develop one step further into the metropolitan region around Leipzig and the nearby city of Halle an der Saale.
The entire region of the Leipzig lowlands (more precisely: Leipzig and the districts surrounding the city Leipziger Land and northern Saxony) belongs to the Central German Transport Association (MDV) at. All network tickets are valid on regional trains, trams and buses in the respective tariff zone (s). The Saxony (Saxony-Anhalt / Thuringia) ticket is also recognized by all public transport in the mdv. If you only want to travel by train to other means of transport without authorization to transfer, you can also purchase tickets at the DB tariff using BahnCard discounts (exception: within the city of Leipzig and for Leipzig-Halle).
