Markkleeberg is a city in the south, directly bordering Leipzig, with a suburban character. Through the immediately adjacent lakes of the Central German Lakeland like the Cospuden and the Markkleeberger See, the city has become a popular local recreation destination.

Numerous lakes have been created around Markkleeberg as a result of the flooding of former opencast mines. Through this development the so-called New Lakeland a popular local recreation area at the gates of Leipzig. Numerous shops are now designed for this type of tourism. The city itself is still quite young. It was not created until 1934 from the places Oetzsch-Markkleeberg and Gautzsch.

The four-lane B 2 runs through Markkleeberg, which connects to the A 38, Leipzig's southern motorway, in the south.

The connection to the public transport network is excellent due to the outskirts of Leipzig: The S-Bahn lines S 4 to Eilenburg, the S 6 to Leipzig-Messe or Borna / Geithain and the S 5 / S 5X to Halle or Altenburg / Zwickau run every half hour, but do not complement each other at regular 10-minute intervals to Leipzig through the city tunnel.

  • Westphalian house. The three-wing country house was designed in 1926 by the architect, painter and publicist Paul Schultze-Naumburg (1869 to 1949) for the general director of the Thuringian gas company Carl Westphal and built in 1927 in a neo-baroque style.

Schultze-Naumburg was a well-known architect whose propagated architectural style represented a recourse to the Biedermeier period. Leipzig New Lakeland

In the south of Leipzig, where the lignite industry once dominated the landscape, there are now many opportunities for experiences in and around the water.
