Markkleeberg is a city in the south, directly bordering Leipzig, with a suburban character. Through the immediately adjacent lakes of the Central German Lakeland like the Cospuden and the Markkleeberger See, the city has become a popular local recreation destination.

Numerous lakes have been created around Markkleeberg as a result of the flooding of former opencast mines. Through this development the so-called New Lakeland a popular local recreation area at the gates of Leipzig. Numerous shops are now designed for this type of tourism. The city itself is still quite young. It was not created until 1934 from the places Oetzsch-Markkleeberg and Gautzsch.

The four-lane B 2 runs through Markkleeberg, which connects to the A 38, Leipzig's southern motorway, in the south.

The connection to the public transport network is excellent due to the outskirts of Leipzig: The S-Bahn lines S 4 to Eilenburg, the S 6 to Leipzig-Messe or Borna / Geithain and the S 5 / S 5X to Halle or Altenburg / Zwickau run every half hour, but do not complement each other at regular 10-minute intervals to Leipzig through the city tunnel.

The tram line 11 runs from Schkeuditz via Wahren, the main train station and Connewitz to Markkleeberg. Every second train, however, only runs shortened as line 11E from Wahren to Dölitz immediately north of Markkleeberg.

The S-Bahn crosses Markkleeberg in a north-south direction and has traffic stops in Markkleeberg-Nord (S4, S5, S5X, S6), Markkleeberg (S4, S5, S5X, S6, here transition to trams and buses), Markkleeberg-Großstädteln (S4, S6) and Markkleeberg-Gaschwitz (S4, S6).

Markkleeberg is located in the tariff area of ​​the Central German Transport Association (MDV), tariff zone 151. All network tickets that are valid for the tariff zone are valid on the S-Bahn, tram and bus. The Saxony, (Saxony-Anhalt, Thuringia) ticket is also valid on all local public transport.

  • Westphalian house. The three-wing country house was designed in 1926 by the architect, painter and publicist Paul Schultze-Naumburg (1869 to 1949) for the general director of the Thuringian gas company Carl Westphal and built in 1927 in a neo-baroque style.

Schultze-Naumburg was a well-known architect whose propagated architectural style represented a recourse to the Biedermeier period. Mostly, following the wishes of the respective builders, he made use of the formal language of several historical styles. His most famous building, by the way, is the Cäcilienhof Palace in Potsdam. The entire interior of the house, such as lamperes, doors and wall cupboards, the library as well as ceilings and sconces are handcrafted products of the highest quality based on designs by the "Saalecker Werkstätten" founded by Schultze-Naumburg Workplace that combined architecture, landscaping and interior design both commercially and artistically in planning and execution. Westphalsche Haus has been owned by Markkleeberg since 1993 and serves the city, its surroundings and its associations as a cultural meeting point and event location.

Leipzig New Lakeland

In the south of Leipzig, where the lignite industry once dominated the landscape, there are now many opportunities for experiences in and around the water. With the closure of opencast mines and their flooding, eight lakes of the future lake landscape, over 70 km² in size, will be created in a process of change. They already offer a wide range of opportunities for sport, leisure and relaxation: Kulkwitzer See, Cospudener See with the water sports center and Zöbigker harbor, Pahna recreation park, Harthsee, Borna reservoir, Großstolpener See, Rötha reservoir, Witznitz reservoir.

  • Störmthaler See - The former open pit is open until 2011[outdated] flooded and will be almost three times the size of the northwestern Markkleeberger See and will contain water sports, nature conservation and art projects.
  • Cospudener See - with diving and sailing school as well as children's playground and promenade. The lake in the south of Leipzig and west of Markkleeberg is now surrounded by a continuously paved 10.4 km long path, so that above all Inline skaters and cyclists get their money's worth. By the way, skates can be rented at Pier 1.
In addition to cafes, ice cream parlor and trattoria, there is the marina, a landing stage for the excursion boat, as well as a boat and diving equipment rental. The beach section is accessible to everyone free of charge, there are plenty of parking spaces and are currently being expanded. However, these are chargeable.
