Grimma is located on the middle reaches of the unified Mulde and is the largest city of the Central Saxon hill country. It is characterized by one of the largest and most interesting historical city centers in western Saxony.

background

Pöppelmannbrücke, in the background the castle / district court and St.-Augustin-Gymnasium

Grimma was founded around 1170 and received city rights in 1220. It owed its growth to its favorable location on the Mulde. The castle, first mentioned in 1200, served as the frequently used residence of the Margraves of Meissen, who later received the title of Dukes of Saxony. There was a first wooden bridge over the Mulde here at the latest in 1292. Since 1440 the Saxon state parliament has been held several times in Grimma. The Princely School St. Augustin, founded in 1550 on the site of the former Augustinian monastery, is one of the most traditional grammar schools in Saxony.

In the beginning of the 18th century, Grimma was an important stage on the express mail route between Leipzig and Dresden. Related to this is the construction of the first stone bridge in 1719, which was designed by the baroque master builder Matthias Daniel Pöppelmann. The writer Johann Gottfried Seume began in 1801 in Grimma his 7000 kilometer “walk after Syracuse“.

Grimma was badly affected by the flood of the Mulde of the century in August 2002. Many of the historic buildings in the old town were badly damaged, and the baroque Pöppelmann Bridge partially collapsed. The visit of the then Federal Chancellor Gerhard Schröder in rubber boots made headlines and possibly contributed to his re-election in the same year. The damage amounted to over 220 million euros. Plaques or lines on many buildings remind of the water level at that time. As soon as the reconstruction work was completed, Grimma was hit again by an extraordinary flood in May and June 2013, which caused damage of another 150 million euros.

Neighboring communities have been incorporated into Grimma several times since the mid-2000s, including Mutzschen, 16 kilometers from the city center. As a result, the population rose from around 18,000 to over 28,000.

Duke Albrecht der Beherzte was born here in 1443, founder of the line of rulers of the Albertines who ruled Saxony until 1918, which is why the castle is also referred to as the “birthplace of Saxony”. The medieval castle was converted into a representative Renaissance castle at the beginning of the 16th century. It was renovated after the flood and has served as a justice center (district court and public prosecutor's office) since 2013. Only shortly after its thorough renovation in 1999/2000, it was severely damaged in the flood of the century in 2002 and partially collapsed. The current bridge from 2009-12 is therefore largely a new building, with only one being rebuilt on the right bank instead of the three historical arches. However, it withstood the renewed flood of 2013.

At the southern end of Grimma is the striking, 80 meter long Suspension bridge. It was built in 1924/25, blown up at the end of World War II in 1945, and then rebuilt. It too had to be repaired after being damaged by the 2002 flood.
