Colditz Castle was a prisoner of war camp for prominent allies during World War II. Colditz belonged to the beginning of the 12th century. to the rule of Groitzsch. It was acquired by Friedrich Barbarossa, who enfeoffed a noble family, the Lords of Colditz. These, which only died out in 1488, sold the city and Colditz Castle to the Margraves of Meissen in 1404. Devastated by the Hussites in 1430, Colditz was rebuilt by Elector Ernst in 1464 and served as the widow's residence for the Electresses for a long time.
