background

Lower market with cathedral and mining museum

Freiberg, created around 1162 due to the silver finds and the state expansion, was once the largest city in the Margraviate of Meißen and an important trading location. The wealth of silver and the important mint made the Margraviate of Meissen, the later Electorate and Kingdom of Saxony, a wealthy state. Silver mining was not stopped until 1913. Instead, after the Second World War, until 1969, there was again increased mining activities in the area of lead, zinc and tin extraction. The smelting of ores, however, has continued uninterrupted until today. Freiberg is the location of one of the world's oldest mining engineering universities and other scientific institutions.
