court is a cultural and university city in the northeast of Upper Franconia with almost 50,000 inhabitants. It lies in the Hofer Land between Fichtel Mountains, Vogtland and Franconian Forest. The city's slogan is "Hof in Bayern at the top". The city is famous worldwide for the Hof International Film Festival. The city is a popular travel destination due to sights such as the old town, the new town in Biedermeier style, the Theresienstein, the botanical garden, the zoological garden and the Untreusee lake.

Districts

background

Hof has had town charter since the 13th century. From the Middle Ages to the modern age, the succession of ownership changed constantly. First the city was ruled by Thuringian and Saxon bailiffs, then came the burgraves of Nuremberg, later the city became Prussian, and finally it came to Bavaria through Napoleon. The city was almost completely destroyed by a major fire in 1823. That is why the city was rebuilt in the Biedermeier style. The ensembles that were created in this way can only be found in Hof on this scale in Bavaria. During the division of Germany, the east of Upper Franconia had a bad reputation as "Bavarian Siberia" because of its peripheral location. The cliché is only partially true, as it can get significantly colder in the Vogtland and Fichtelgebirge; the city is almost 500 m above sea level. NN high. The city is now considered the central city in the middle of Europe.

The former state border of the GDR ran through the middle of the village, making Mödlareuth a “miniature Berlin”, so to speak, with everything that goes with it: In the center of the small town there was a 700 meter long wall and multiple staggered border fortifications. Today there is a very interesting border museum here; You can see a part of the original wall, a watchtower, dog running system and military vehicles, including a Soviet tank. There is a small exhibition on the division of Germany as well as film screenings in the museum building.
