Schwarzenbach on the Saale is a town in the district of Hof in the Bavarian administrative district Upper Franconia in the Hofer Land. It is the first city on the upper reaches of the Saale.

The most famous resident was Johann Friedrich Richter, too Jean Paul called. The famous poet and philosopher lived here from 1776 to 1779 and from 1790 to 1794 and was confirmed here. His father was a pastor in Schwarzenbach from 1776 to 1779 and is buried here in the cemetery.

  • The Langer Gang Memorial in the Bahnhofstrasse, a monument commemorates the death march of the women from the Helmbrechts concentration camp. It is open every first Sunday of the month from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and by prior arrangement.
  • The Jean-Paul circuit leads in the footsteps of Jean Paul past 14 stations through the town.
  • Hallerstein is a small church village on a hill above the Förmitz reservoir. There is a ruined castle next to the church. It is a very original village in the style of the early 19th century.
