Jean Paul actually Johann Paul Friedrich Richter, was a German writer who was not only in Upper Franconia has left its mark.

Childhood and Youth 1763–1783

Our journey begins in Wunsiedel in the Fichtel MountainsHe was born there on March 21, 1763 as the son of a teacher and organist. The house where Jean-Paul was born is in Wunsiedel, and a monument has also been dedicated to him. In addition, the rock labyrinth of the Luisenburg should not be missed.

In 1765 his father became a pastor in Joditz at the Saale in Hofer Land with the beautiful Auensee.

From 1776 to 1779 and from 1790 to 1794 he lived in Schwarzenbach on the Saale and was confirmed there. His father was a pastor in Schwarzenbach from 1776 to 1779 and is now buried there in the cemetery. From 1779 he attended the gymnasium in Hof.

From May 1789 studies of theology in Leipzig. In 1783 he wrote his first satires, e.g. Greenland Trials.

Male years 1784–1815

In 1784 he had to flee from his creditors and returned court back to his mother. From 1787 he was a private teacher.

1793 was his first literary success with The invisible lodge, he calls himself Jean Paul for the first time.

At the invitation of his admirer Charlotte von Kalb, Jean Paul visited in 1796 Weimar, the literary center of its time. He moved there in 1798.

At the height of his literary fame, Jean Paul followed suit in October 1800 Berlin.

Jean Paul lived in from 1802 to 1803 Meiningen and created his bestseller Titan there. The monument to Jean Paul is a bust on a high pedestal and is clearly visible in the English Garden on a hill.

His last years 1815-1825

In 1817 he received an honorary doctorate in Heidelberg.

In 1823 he went blind.

In Friedrichstrasse in Bayreuth He lived in house number 10 for some time, and on the other side of the street in number 5, today's Jean-Paul-Apotheke, he died on November 14th, 1825. We walk out of the city on Erlanger Straße and turn right into the city cemetery, here is a large, ivy-covered sandstone - the grave of the poet, a memorial was also placed on him in the city hall.

You can find them in the Königsalle in Bayreuth, on the corner towards the Hermitage Rollwenzelei. Jean Paul frequented this house almost every day, from 1805 to 1825, for the last 20 years of his life. His poets' room has been preserved in its original form and is probably the smallest museum in Germany. The Jean Paul Parlor was restored in 2007 and 2010.
