Schauenstein (606 m above sea level) is a town in the district of Hof in the Bavarian administrative district Upper Franconia. It is located on the Selbitztal and on the edge of the Franconian Forest.

Rail traffic has been idle since 1975, since then the next train stations have been in Selbitz (Upper Franconia) and Helmbrechts.

In the street

Schauenstein is on the six-lane, but still very busy Autobahn 9, which leads from Munich via Nuremberg to Berlin. The driver leaves the motorway at the exit Symbol: AS 34 Hof-West and drives about 5 km westwards via Leupoldsgrün and Neudorf. If you are coming from Nuremberg, you can alternatively take the motorway at the exit Symbol: AS 35 Leave Münchberg-Nord and about Helmbrechts drive.

By bicycle

In the village itself, everything can be easily reached on foot, and there are many vertical meters to be overcome by bike. However, one more walk is necessary to get to the individual districts.

The cuisine is Franconian down-to-earth, with a large selection of roasts with potato dumplings. There are also snacks with sausage and ham specialties. There is seasonally carp or game. A specialty that is rarely found in inns is "Schnitz and Baggala", a vegetable soup with potato fritters.

To the northwest and down the valley you reach Uschertsgrün (Gasthaus Geupel, Tel. 49 (0) 9252 7241) and 3 km to the west again Haidengrün (Restaurant Sonnenhof, Tel. 49 (0) 9289 1490; Ferienhaus am Kornfeld, Tel. 49 (0) 3342 200740 ). The Döbraberg, the highest mountain in the Franconian Forest, is only approx. 10 km away from Schauenstein and can be reached from Haidengrün via Döbra.

The Selbitz has the romantic on its last kilometers up to the confluence with the Saale Hell Valley created at Bad Steben. It can be easily reached by bike from Schauenstein on the Selbitztalweg.

The next bigger places in the area are:

  • Selbitz (Upper Franconia) (4 km north, via Weidesgrün) - located on the railway line from Hof ​​to Bad Steben.
  • Helmbrechts (5 km south, via Volkmannsgrün) - Upper Franconian Textile Museum.
  • Naila (8 km northwest, via Selbitz) - a place near which a GDR refugee family landed in a hot air balloon in 1979. The original balloon is in the Nailaer Museum.
  • Schwarzenbach am Wald (13 km to the west, via Döbra) - a holiday resort at the foot of the Döbraberges.
  • Bad Steben (17 km northwest, via Naila) - offers a thermal bath with mineral water and a large sauna area and a casino.
