Schauenstein (606 m above sea level) is a town in the district of Hof in the Bavarian administrative district Upper Franconia. It is located on the Selbitztal and on the edge of the Franconian Forest.

By train
Rail traffic has been idle since 1975, since then the next train stations have been in Selbitz (Upper Franconia) and Helmbrechts.
In the street
Schauenstein is on the six-lane, but still very busy Autobahn 9, which leads from Munich via Nuremberg to Berlin. The driver leaves the motorway at the exit 
34 Hof-West and drives about 5 km westwards via Leupoldsgrün and Neudorf. If you are coming from Nuremberg, you can alternatively take the motorway at the exit 35 Leave Münchberg-Nord and about Helmbrechts drive.
By bicycle
The is suitable for the cyclist Selbitz cycle path, that of Helmbrechts in the south and Naila leads to Schauenstein in the north.

mobility
In the village itself, everything can be easily reached on foot, and there are many vertical meters to be overcome by bike. However, one more walk is necessary to get to the individual districts.
Several times a day direct bus connection to court, Helmbrechts and Selbitz (Upper Franconia) on weekdays.
Tourist Attractions
- 1 Castle with fire brigade museum and local history museum, Schlossplatz 1. Tel.: 49(0)9252 99600, Fax: 49(0)9252 996026. The building consists of a three-storey main wing with a corner tower and two wing structures that enclose a courtyard. It is essentially from the 15th century, with extensions and restorations in 1594, 1754 and 1938.
- Opened in 1988 Fire Brigade Museum. Open: beginning of April to the end of October, Sun 1.30 p.m. - 5.00 p.m.Price: adults € 3, young people aged 12 and over € 1.50, combined ticket fire brigade and local history museum € 5.
- The local history museum is also housed in the castle. It opens from the beginning of April to the end of October; Sun from 13:00 to 17:00; Pre-registration for groups outside the opening times possible; 1.25 € entry, reduced 0.75 €
- At the top of the Marketplace is the Evangelical Schauensteiner Church, behind it the castle, which was mentioned as a knight's castle in the 12th century. The entire ensemble is under monument protection.
- The Evangelical Lutheran Bartholomäuskirche is a hall building with a three-sided end and south tower from the 15th century
- The Rectory is essentially late medieval and was expanded in 1572-88, the half-timbered upper floor was renewed in 1680.
- The Gebhardt fountain from 1910 on the market square in front of the church
- The Crypt chapel with eight epitaphs from the 17th and early 18th centuries
- Around the rock formations 2 Watching virginin the city park and the 3 Sleeping giants Old stories entwine on the slope towards Volkmannsgrün.

It is a typical small farmer's and craftsman's house in the eastern Franconian Forest, most of which is still furnished as it was during the lifetime of the last inhabitant (1879-1964).Open: from May 1st to Thanksgiving Day on Sundays and public holidays from 1pm to 4pm. For groups it is also open on weekdays after registration.Price: Entry is free.

The cuisine is Franconian down-to-earth, with a large selection of roasts with potato dumplings. There are also snacks with sausage and ham specialties. There is seasonally carp or game. A specialty that is rarely found in inns is "Schnitz and Baggala", a vegetable soup with potato fritters.

There are no cafés, bars or clubs directly in Schauenstein, but only in the other larger towns in the area, e.g. Selbitz, Naila or Helmbrechts (cf. trips).

To the northwest and down the valley you reach Uschertsgrün (Gasthaus Geupel, Tel. 49 (0) 9252 7241) and 3 km to the west again Haidengrün (Restaurant Sonnenhof, Tel. 49 (0) 9289 1490; Ferienhaus am Kornfeld, Tel. 49 (0) 3342 200740 ). The Döbraberg, the highest mountain in the Franconian Forest, is only approx. 10 km away from Schauenstein and can be reached from Haidengrün via Döbra.
The Selbitz has the romantic on its last kilometers up to the confluence with the Saale Hell Valley created at Bad Steben. It can be easily reached by bike from Schauenstein on the Selbitztalweg.
The next bigger places in the area are:
- Selbitz (Upper Franconia) (4 km north, via Weidesgrün) - located on the railway line from Hof to Bad Steben.
- Helmbrechts (5 km south, via Volkmannsgrün) - Upper Franconian Textile Museum.
- Naila (8 km northwest, via Selbitz) - a place near which a GDR refugee family landed in a hot air balloon in 1979. The original balloon is in the Nailaer Museum.
- Schwarzenbach am Wald (13 km to the west, via Döbra) - a holiday resort at the foot of the Döbraberges.
- Bad Steben (17 km northwest, via Naila) - offers a thermal bath with mineral water and a large sauna area and a casino.
