background

The name Vogtland refers to the empire-direct land administered by special bailiffs. Such bailiffs can be found there at the end of the 10th and beginning of the 11th centuries; The bailiwick soon became hereditary in the Reuss family. But the whole area was never the exclusive property of the Russian bailiffs, because there were always other imperial dynasts living in between, e.g. the Counts of Eberstein near Plauen, the Lords of Lobdeburg, the Counts of Orlamünde, etc. Traditionally, the Vogtland is a stronghold of the textile industry. Cloth and linen have been made since the Middle Ages, and in the largest city, Plauen, embroidery has established itself.
