Klingenthal in the east of the Vogtlandes is on the border to Czech Republic and at the foot of the Aschberges (936 m above sea level). The 8-kilometer-long city in the music corner of the Vogtland has become known for its musical instrument making and as a holiday resort and winter sports center. It is surrounded by countless spruce forests.

The place arose in the 16th century as a result of copper, tin and iron mining and developed as a commercial location over the years. It was not until 1834 that Klingenthal, which remained village-like, was called Marktflecken, until in 1919 the town, which had meanwhile grown together with neighboring industrial estates, became a town. From 1659 violins were made, later also harmonica and accordion. Klingenthal has had a railway connection since 1875.

Even in the GDR era, the population of the heavily industrialized city was declining. The economic decline after the reunification accelerated this process, and the cheap competition from the Czech Republic, to which a road and rail border crossing has been leading since 2001, has by no means played a small part in this development.
