background
The origin of the place Reichenbach
The origins of the city of Reichenbach probably lie in one Slavic settlement in the Raumbachtal. From 10./11. The first Franconian settlers settled in the old town in the 18th century. Over the years, the Franks took over the Slavs' living space around the Osterberg. This historical development reveals Slavic and German roots in the place name. From the 12th century, mansions for administrative administration were built in the former Slavic settlement areas. The manor on Johannisplatz is identical to the one mentioned in 1364 "Castrum Rychenbach", the castle of the Reussians mentioned in a document (zu Plauen). Reichenbach was first mentioned in a document in 1212. Between 1223 and 1236 Reichenbach came into the possession of the bailiffs. After Heinrich V, the younger, died childless shortly after 1240, his nephew Heinrich I von Plauen inherited his property. Heinrich V probably raised Reichenbach to town during his time in office. In the document of September 1, 1271 Reichenbach is first mentioned as "civitati richenbach", a fortified market settlement with special defense, trade and fortification rights. After the Thirty Years' War there was a significant boom in the textile industry. The prosperity of the city declined noticeably as a result of numerous city fires in 1681, 1720, 1773 and 1833.
19th and early 20th centuries
Reichenbach came to the Mylau rule in the 16th century Electoral Office of Plauen. In 1856 Reichenbach became the seat of the Reichenbach court office. In 1875 it was incorporated into the Administrative Authority Plauen (AH Plauen).
The beginning of industrialization in 1825 gave Reichenbach a new economic boom. The opening of the Reichenbach train station and the rail link to Dresden, Leipzig, Hof and Plauen greatly boosted industrial development. In addition to worsted and carded yarn spinning mills, weaving mills and cloth factories, iron and paper processing companies settled in Reichenbach from the end of the 19th century. August Horch, the pioneer of the automotive industry, built from 1902 to 1904 in his company Horch & Cie. the Horch Tonneau, the first Saxon automobile. From 1909 Reichenbach owned an electricity company with an overland center. A 28 m was built for the drinking water supply high water tower in the Bauhaus style, which was designed by the city architect Rudolf Ladewig was built. The building complex of the Higher textile schoolwhich today from the West Saxon University is used as a textile training facility.
time of the nationalsocialism
In August 1923, the National Socialists founded the local NSDAP group in Reichenbach. One day after Hitler came to power in 1933, a National Socialist rally was held on the market square, followed by a torchlight procession. As early as February 2nd, house searches in trade union houses, party halls and private individuals began in the city and the surrounding area for prohibited writings, weapons, ammunition, etc. On March 8th, the Volkshaus (today's town hall on the market) was occupied by the SA and SS as well Swastika and SS flags hoisted. The next day the arrests of functionaries of the KPD and SPD, Bible Students, Jews, MPs, Lord Mayor Dr. Bold and other unpleasant people. The prisoners were held, interrogated and tortured in the Volkshaus. Some prisoners did not survive imprisonment. On May 16, around 200 prisoners were transferred from the Volkshaus to the newly established Obermylau concentration camp. After 186 air raids, Reichenbach was attacked directly on March 21, 1945. In the Anglo-American bombing, 161 people were killed, 73 buildings were completely destroyed and 675 were damaged. The then Albertschule was used as a hospital at that time. On April 17, 1945, Reichenbach was briefly occupied by American troops after surrendering without a fight. The American occupation lasted until the end of June. The invasion of the Soviet Army took place on July 1, 1945. Reichenbach was spared three bombing raids because it was handed over to the American troops without a fight.
1945 to 1989
From September 1, 1952, the Reichenbach district educated. In 1946 the first state-owned enterprises (VEB) were established in Reichenbach. In 1972 the remaining medium-sized private companies were converted into public property and merged into combines.
After the political change in 1989
Reichenbach remained the district town of the newly renamed district of Reichenbach, but after German reunification lost many jobs in addition to many jobs. On January 1, 1996 Reichenbach lost the district seat. The district of Reichenbach became part of the Vogtland district and the city received the status in 1997 as part of the Saxon district reform "Large district town". On January 1, 2016, the cities of Reichenbach and Mylau merged.
