The famous spa town Františkovy Lázně, "Franzensbad", spoken: frantʲischkowi laaßnʲä, IPA: [ˈfrancɪʃkɔvɪ ˈlaːzɲɛː] lies between Cheb, and Bad Brambach at the foot of the Elstergebirge and is the corner point of the West Bohemian spa triangle.

Although the healing springs have been known since the Middle Ages, the city was only founded in 1793 by a local doctor. Franzensbad was a spa town of international standing as early as 1850. Beethoven, Herder and even Goethe were his guests.

In the street

You leave from the direction of Saxony Plauen from the highway A72 via the B 92 to the Schönberg border crossing and then via the Czech trunk road 21. There the road meets trunk road 64 from Aš, where the road joins Same and the highway A72 is connected in Upper Franconia.
Another option is to drive from Marktredwitz from the highway A93 about Schirnding on the D6 (requires a vignette) to the north Eger, where you branch off onto the trunk road 21 to Franzensbad. The toll section can be bypassed if you turn off shortly before the start of the R6 to Pomezí nad Ohří and continue to Cheb. In Cheb, follow the course of the road and then come to a roundabout. You leave this at the second exit and then at the end of the village you get back on the trunk road 21. Coming from the direction of Upper Palatinate, drive from Mitterteich-Süd (A93, exit 17) on the B299 to Waldsassen and from there on the B299 towards the border crossing. In the Czech Republic, the connecting road 214 takes you back to the trunk road 21, which offers several options for the exit to Franzensbad.

  • The nature reserve Soos (Wikipedia) northeast of Franzensbad is a European rarity, where pure carbon dioxide escapes in so-called mofettes. There is a 1.2 km long nature trail that leads across the moor and is a bit reminiscent of Icelandic natural spectacles on a small scale.
  • Skalná (Wildstein, 6 km north) - between Franzensbad and Plesná in the Elster Mountains located; Not far away is the Soos moorland.
  • Cheb (Eger, 8 km south, trunk road 21) - the next larger town.
  • Bad Brambach (12 km north, trunk road 21 / B 92) - Radon bath; the only health resort in Europe that uses radon as a natural remedy.
