Kronach

Kronach located in Upper Franconia in the Franconian Forest. The city's most famous son is Lucas Cranach the Elder. Ä., One of the most important German painters and graphic artists of the Renaissance. The fortress Rosenberg, one of the best preserved fortifications in Germany, towers over the city, the old town at the foot of the fortress is very well preserved and well worth seeing.

The citizens of Kronach have had the nickname since the Thirty Years' War Kroniche Housnküh. During the siege by the Swedes, the need was great, water and food were at an end, the citizens were starving. As a ruse, an old female hare (rabbit cow) was allowed to hobble around on the city wall. The besiegers thought that if the Kronach could still afford to let animals roam free, then another siege made no sense and withdrew.

Although the city is on the important long-distance line Berlin - Munich, the ICEs all go through. However, there are regional train and regional express connections from Saalfeld and Lichtenfels alternating every hour.   • The rises above the city Rosenberg Fortress, with 23.6 hectares it is one of the largest and best-preserved fortifications in Europe. It was never taken and has had its current pentagonal shape since the 17th century. The fortress tours are available from March to October every day except Monday at 11am / 12.30pm / 2pm / 4pm and from November to February at 11am / 2pm. There are three museums on the fortress:

Melchior-Otto-Platz in the Upper City
  • Below the fortress is the historic old town. It divides into the one surrounded by the city wall and lying on a mountain spur Upper city and including the so-called Lower city. In large parts, a historical ensemble of buildings has been preserved there. Those are especially worth seeing old City Hall at the market square and the early Gothic City parish church St. Johannes d. T. The is located in front of the church on Melchior-Otto-Platz Honor column.

  • The remains of the Bronze Age fortifications are on the Wolfsberg Heunischenburg. It is the oldest scientifically researched stone fortification in Europe. It is located on the B 303 to Mitwitz and Coburg, a few kilometers west of Kronach, behind the Gehülz district, the route is signposted. Due to the importance of the complex, the triple wall and the gate system were partially reconstructed.   • Through the State horticultural show In 2002, a five-hectare recreational area near the city was created. A 200-meter-long promenade with an avenue of lime trees leads from the north entrance to a stepped stone terrace, which serves as a grandstand for the floating stage on the opposite bank. There is also an adventure playground, a climbing and observation tower, the circular teaching garden and a sculpture path. In addition, a skater facility, a playing field for ball sports and a mooring for raft trips have been created.

The Kronach are famous for theirs Sausages (Broudwörschd), classic, grilled with sauerkraut, in a vinegar and onion broth as Blue tips or as Panties, only the sausage meat is baked here.

They are a specialty in Kronach Blöchla, a lard pastry that is hollow on the inside and is made in the shape of a tube with a special iron. The blöcher, simply sprinkled with powdered sugar, is mainly eaten with coffee during the Kerwa season.

The term Smack appeared in the Renaissance and Baroque periods. Back then, every citizen of the Upper City had the right to brew beer between Michaelmas Day on September 29 and Georgi Day on April 23. In between, the people of Kronach from Oberstädter were not allowed to brew any beer, unless there was a major celebration, such as a wedding or child baptism. Then the city council could approve an additional brew, the so-called Schmüß. The term still exists today, initially as a special beer on historical festivals, today it is included in the brewery's range, a dark full beer with 4.5% alcohol, the Schmäus-Bräu.
