The town Altenkunstadt is located on the Obermain in the district Lichtenfels in the Bavarian administrative district Upper Franconia. On the other side of the Mains lies the counterpart Burgkunstadt.

Altenkunstadt is on the B 289, the Kulmbach With Lichtenfels connects. In Burgkunstadt, Weismainer Straße branches off to the left, which takes you to the Main Bridge after 500 meters and thus to Altenkunstadt.

  • Altenkunstadt lies at the foot of the Kordigast, a mountain of witnesses (Wikipedia) with two peaks. A summit cross is attached to the Great Kordigast (536 m above sea level), but the Great is about two meters lower than the Small Kordigast. From the summit cross you have a wide view over the Obermaintal to the Plassenburg in Kulmbach. There are two inns on the Kordigast to stop off after the ascent.

Since the brew pans used to be made of wood for boiling the wort, they were heated from the inside with hot stones. After the invention of the metal brew pans, this went out of fashion. According to this old brewing process, the wort is heated by adding hot stones. As a result, some of the malt sugar caramelizes and gives the beer a caramel note. These Steinbier is produced by the local Leikheim brewery and can be sampled in the inns.

  • To Burgkunstadt on the other side of the Main you can walk
  • Weismain (5 km south) - small town and state-approved resort on the northern edge of Franconian Switzerland. Parish church of St. Martin and typical Franconian city gate; out of town in the direction of Stadelhofen the Kleinziegenfelder valley.
  • Kronach (14 km north, from Hummenberg B 173) - district town and most important town on the railway line from Lichtenfels to Saalfeld in Thuringia; Veste Rosenberg.
  • Lichtenfels (15 km to the west, B 289) - the town of the Korbmacher is a railway junction; Old town with city palace.
  • Kulmbach (17 km to the east, B 289) - the brewery town of Kulmbach is the next larger town next to Kronach. The Plassenburg towers above Kulmbach, including a tin figure museum.
