Michel in the Au

Michelau is a center of basket making in Germany. It arose from a fishing village on the Main, where piles were made for the vineyards in Mainfranken until the 18th century. Basketry spread in the 18th century. The products were sold as far as Holland in 1780, and as far as Prussia and Russia in 1792. Around 1900 there were almost 900 basket makers in Michelau, whose products were sold all over the world.

Michelau is on the railway line from Bamberg to court. The next ICE stop on the route is in Lichtenfels Berlin–Munich.

  • Parish Church of Maria-König in Neuensee
  • The Knocker Maker Statue reminds of the carpet beating craft that was practiced in the village from 1840 to 1980. The sculpture was made by Wolfgang Zwieb in 1997 and shows Kathi Ritzel, one of the last of the knockers' guild.
