Suhl is the largest city in the Thuringian Forest. It is particularly known for its traditional weapon production.

Suhl was first mentioned in a document in 1330 as a village, which was bought by the Counts of Henneberg and received city rights in 1527. From 1815 to 1945 it belonged to Prussia. From 1952 to 1990 Suhl was the district town of the district of Suhl.

The Goldlauter glider and motorsport airfield is located in Suhl-Goldlauter. It is considered to be one of the most scenic airfields in Germany with special thermal conditions for glider pilots.

By train

Before the Second World War, the Suhl station was an en-route station for trains from Berlin to Saarbrücken, from Berlin to Tubingen and even for a Berlin night train - Rome. Until 1990 there were 3 pairs of express trains to Berlin every day.

By bus

Suhl is served by numerous buses in the neighboring districts. There are direct overland connections to Hildburghausen, Meiningen, Bad Salzungen, Ilmenau, Oberhof and Masserberg, among others.

  • The main church St. Mary from 1487–91 was rebuilt after the city fires in 1590, 1634 and 1753. It received the rococo interior in 1761. It is considered to be the largest preserved rococo church in eastern Germany.
