background

Schmalkalden and the immediate region is a specialty, because the place and some neighboring places belonged since 1583 as "Reign of Schmalkalden"continuously to Hesse. That is the reason why Hessian and not Thuringian is spoken in Schmalkalden to this day. Affiliation to Hesse ended in 1944 through a Führer decree and was then cemented by the Iron Curtain. Schmalkalden still belongs to the Protestant church Hessen, the Catholic Church, on the other hand, has adapted to modern administrative boundaries.
