The Mommelstein cycle path is one of the most scenic cycle paths in Thuringia, partly on the former railway mountain track. It begins in Wernshausen on the Werra, where it connects to Werratal cycle path and leads up to the Grenzwiese am Big Island Mountain. There is a connection to the Rennsteig cycle path.

background
The Schmalkalden - Brotterode railway line was shut down in 1999. The cycle path was opened in 2003. The Mommelstein is a rock in the Trusetal, from which one has a good view (derived from text sources). There was a railway stop nearby.

Route description with sights
Generally
The Mommelstein cycle path begins in Wernshausen and leads to the first Schmalkalden. The path from Schmalkalden to the former Auwallenburg train station is an asphalted cycle track at 550 m. The route also has six other crossings under or below it. From Trusetal-Auwallenburg, the route runs over gravel forest roads (very bad route!) Through the Trusetal. From here it also goes up to the forest paths Borderline on the Grosse Inselberg at 916 m, where there is a connection to the Rennsteig cycle path.
Corner points of the route
- Wernshausen - the place will go along with the Werratal cycle path Leave to the east. The local road leads to the federal road 19. This is crossed after approx. 100 m and you turn into a cycle path that follows the railway line to Schmalkalden. You pass the train station from
- Niedermalkalden
- Schmalkalden - The well-preserved medieval half-timbered town is worth a look. To do this, you have to leave the route.
- Auwallenburg - this former train station is located in the middle of the forest.
