Parallel to the known Hiking trail available in Thuringia also a challenging cycle track. The starting point of the cycle path is in Hörschel at the Werra (at Eisenach). The route ends in Blankenstein at the Saale.
Route profile
- Length: 195 km
- Signposting: sufficiently large intermediate signposts with logo; Signage quality: good (Section Hörschel - Blankenstein; Inspection 06-2020)
- Slopes:In contrast to the hiking route, there is a little more lost altitude on the bike route, as the bike path often deviates from the topographical ideal line of the main ridge (sporty height profile).
- Path condition: Strongly changing; large sections of the path are graveled (partly quite coarse gravel surfaces), but roads are also used. The asphalt portion of the route is specified in the cycle route planner as 30%.
- Traffic load: The western section Hörschel - Oberhof is almost completely free of traffic; To the east, rural roads are often used, some of which are approved for 100 km / h and which are also driven on.
- Suitable bike: Due to the inclines and longer gravel sections, it is advisable to use a MTB or a mountain bike touring bike with good tread tires.
- Family suitability: No
- Inline suitability: No
background
In addition to the cycle path, there is also the MTB route. This crosses the ridge many times and is therefore about twice as long and has significantly more vertical meters. Unfortunately, the proportion of single trails is very low. The route is therefore more for gravel bikes.
