Map of Lauscha

background

The glass blower town Lauscha lies elongated in a side valley of the Steinach im Thuringian Slate Mountains. As is typical for the region, the house facades are mostly covered with slate shingles. Lauscha owes its existence to the glassworks built here by Hans Greiner from Swabia and Christoph Müller from Bohemia in 1597, one of the oldest in the Thuringian Forest. To this day, Lauscha, the birthplace of the glass Christmas tree decorations, is characterized and known by the glassblowing trade.

Idyll in the upper Steinachtal

Lauscha is a state-approved resort. The extensive forests around the place offer an intensive experience of the undisturbed nature in idyllic tranquility. Hikes and active recreation in a constant stimulating climate, enjoying the clean, stress-free and oxygen-rich air and the naturally slightly mineralized drinking water have been proven to provide relief from stubborn respiratory diseases and skin eczema, but also simply a high recreational value.

getting there

By train

The Sonneberg railway line, which railway enthusiasts will remember as the domain of the 95 series, is used by the South Thuringia Railway (StB) operated every hour. The railcars continue to run via Ernstthal to the winter sports resort Neuhaus am Rennweg, with a change of direction in the Lauscha terminus and another in Ernstthal. For a long time, the future of the railway line was uncertain, and nothing is moving between Ernstthal and Probstzella or Saalfeld (the original line) at the moment. However, this section was taken over by the Deutsche Regionaleisenbahn GmbH, which has set itself the goal of maintaining railways in the area. So if you come from the direction of Saalfeld and rely on public transport, you have to take the bus to Neuhaus and then change to the StB.

In the street

Lauscha is south of the B 281, the Ice field at the Highway 73 overNeuhaus am Rennweg With Saalfeld connects. In Neuhaus, the L 1149 branches off from the B 281, the one via Lauscha Sonneberg leads.

mobility

The elongated place is still quite flat at the bottom along the railway tracks, while the main road above the train station is more inclined and therefore foot explorations are a little more strenuous. Not all paths are barrier-free, some are only accessible to a limited extent in winter.

The 705 bus runs in Lauscha and takes you to important points in the city and in the Ernstthal am Rennsteig district. The Südthüringenbahn runs every hour in both directions to the Lauscha (Thuringia) station, the Oberlauscha stop and the Ernstthal am Rennsteig station (DB course book route 564). The journey through the Lauschenstein tunnel, over the "Nasse Telle" viaduct, high above the Steinachgrund and the Lauschatal to the intersection with the Rennsteig, is in itself an extraordinary train experience.

The hiking trails and routes in and around Lauscha have differently demanding elevation profiles. The tourist information provides detailed information on the difficulty of the routes. Hikes can be led on request. Hikers should have a minimum of stamina and surefootedness. City and hiking tours

Tourist Attractions

Farbglashütte, exhibition site of the Museum for Glass Art Lauscha since 2014
  • Museum for Glass Art Lauscha. The Museum für Glaskunst Lauscha, one of the most traditional municipal museums in Germany, provides interesting information about the history of Thuringian glass from the 16th century to the present day. In addition to artistically designed glasses and magnificent Christmas tree decorations, the extensive collection also includes other glass products, such as artificial human eyes made of glass and delicate toys. The production of glass beads is also impressively documented. This time travel testifies to the craftsmanship and inventiveness of the glassmakers and glassblowers, but also gives an idea of the hardship of the filigree production of the glass treasures in the past. Lauscha glass artists and artisans present their current works. Since April 2014, the collection has been shown in new, barrier-free exhibition rooms in the color glass works.Open: Opening times: Tuesday to Saturday from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m., Sundays and public holidays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Glass art shop in the color glass works Lauscha
  • Color glass works Lauscha. The glassworks is part of the tradition of glassware production in Lauscha, which has been uninterrupted since 1597. Founded in 1853 by the entrepreneur Elias Greiner-Vetter-Sohn at the current location, semi-finished products for glassblowing are still manufactured here in selected quality by hand. The production of the glass rods and glass tubes can be followed from a spacious visitor area. A video lecture informs about the company's history in an entertaining way. In three sales areas, different glassware, glass jars, blown glass, Christmas tree decorations and much more are offered.Open: Opening times: All week 10 a.m. - 5 p.m., guided tours daily (hourly) 10.30 a.m. - 12.30 p.m. and 2.30 p.m. - 3.30 p.m. Lunch break 1 p.m. - 2 p.m.
Studio glassworks in the Lauscha Glass Center
  • Glass center Lauscha. The Lauscha Glass Center, which was created in 2003 from a former glassworks, follows on from the Lauscha glassworks tradition in a different way. A studio log cabin offers the opportunity to watch glassware being made. If you like, you can talk to the glass master. The furnace technology in the glassworks was completely renewed in 2011, everything is more modern, cleaner than before - but work on the glassmaker's stage is still based on the same working methods and tools as were used in Lauscha's first glassworks over 400 years ago . Right next door, in front of a gas-oxygen flame, glass designers use colored glass rods to create fragile works of art that are solely subject to human craftsmanship and are unparalleled in their diversity. The unique items can be purchased in the sales area. A wide range of Lauscher art glassblowers and glass designers are also offered here.Open: Opening times: All week 10 a.m. - 5 p.m.
Evangelical town church
  • Protestant town church - The church in rare Art Nouveau architecture was built from 1910 to 1911 according to plans by the Leipzig architect Julius Zeißig and was inaugurated on September 17, 1911. Designed as a hall church, it has a rectangular floor plan with a vestibule under the church tower and a baptistery and sacristy behind the altar and the pulpit. The nave stands on a basement in which the winter church is located, originally the confirmation hall. The facade of the house of God consists of embossed natural stone cuboid, whereby the building edges, windows and doors are emphasized by light stone surrounds. The 38 meter high church tower with the main entrance is oriented to the south-west and has a whitewashed hood with a lantern and a weather vane in the shape of a trumpet angel. It is flanked on both sides by stair towers. The nave has a coffered ceiling and a circumferential gallery with an organ on the northeast side. Based on the Wiesbaden program, the slightly protruding altar, the pulpit and the organ were arranged one above the other in the central axis of the interior. The church has a large number of colored glass windows on which the names of the donors can also be read. The glass paintings were designed by Karl Schulz from Dresden and the Urban workshop in Dresden produced them. People from the local and church history are represented on the eight windows under the longitudinal galleries. The gallery windows show scenes from the New Testament. The window above the main entrance depicts the risen Christ. The three colored glass windows in the vestibule by Knoch & Lysek from Coburg show the local and church history. The organ with pneumatic tone and stop action, 28 sounding stops and 15 side slides was supplied by the Nuremberg organ builder Johannes Strebel. In 1938 it was rearranged and in 2001 an extensive restoration by Rösel & Hercher followed. The church is mostly open, visits are possible on request.

Ernstthal on the Rennsteig

Blowing Glass ornament fabrication Lauscha.jpg
  • The district located 2 km northeast on the Rennsteig was founded by the five Lauscha glass masters Hans and Nicol Müller, Hans Georg Böhm and Christoph and Jakob Greiner. On March 7, 1707, the then sovereign Duke Johann Ernst zu Sachsen Coburg Saalfeld granted the glassmasters the concession to build a glassworks in the Graefenthal district above Königswiese. It was to be called "Ernstthal" and was the starting point for later settlement. In Ernstthal mainly medical glass, instruments, dishes and colored glass beads as well as art objects were manufactured. Ernstthal is the seat of medium-sized companies Ernstthal glassworks and Cancer glass Lauscha. Right on the Rennsteig and a little away from the actual town center is the Ernstthal am Rennsteig train station, the turning point of the railway from Sonneberg to Neuhaus. The residents of the neighboring towns call the Ernstthäler “moonstruckers” because around 1900 the two Ernstthälers Arno and Fritz climbed the Pappenheimer Berg after an atmospheric beer tour in the Gasthaus Dores and tried to “steer” towards the moon with a wooden pole.

Mountain springs and fountains

  • The lovingly framed springs and fountains Mountain spring, Edelweiss fountain, Michelsbrunnen, Marienbrunnen, Heimatborn, Mohr spring, Lauschenstein fountain, Lion fountain and the Unterländer water fountain are hiked on the "Brunnenroute". There are other enclosed springs and fountains in the urban area: Harborn fountain, Lügenborn, Brückleinsbrunnen, Schubert fountain, Königsbrunnen, Michelsbrünn am Schmiedsbach, Christian Eichhorn Sens fountain. Soon the dilapidated Tunnel well secured and developed.
