Winter sports began in Oberhof at the beginning of the last century, when sports enthusiasts from Oberhof built the first jumps and bobsleigh runs and brought Norwegians into the town to help out in development.

The winter sports resort offers the opportunity to practice numerous sporting activities. Above all, this includes cross-country skiing with trails for classic and skating technique, alpine skiing on a (blue) run and a children's hill, as well as hiking or indoor sports such as badminton or climbing. Oberhof therefore appeals more to the somewhat older guest, a party mile like in other ski resorts is not to be found here.

In addition to numerous world cup events, some world championships were also held in Oberhof. These include the Nordic World Ski Championships and the Two-Man Bobsleigh Championships in 1931, the Luge World Championships in 1973, 1985 and 2008 and the Biathlon World Championships in 2004.
