background

In the 12th century, charcoal burners and farmers, as well as wagons, blacksmiths and carters settled in the basins on the southern slope of the mountain ridge. Despite the poor suitability for agriculture, the two villages Zella St. Blasii and Mehlis developed briskly through passport services and the mining of silver and iron. The processing of metals into weapons and fine tools has also been documented since the late Middle Ages. These industries ensured the livelihoods of most of the residents in the centuries that followed. Since 1347 Zella St. Blasii belonged to the Wettins, after their division to the Ernestine line and from the 16th century to the new principality of Saxe-Gotha. Part of Mehlis initially remained under the rule of the County of Henneberg, after its decline, both places belonged to the Ernestine Principality of Saxe-Gotha from 1617 onwards. Although a looting by Croatian troops is noted from the Thirty Years' War, the decades-long campaigns brought an economic boom for the weapons workshops in the two villages, which gradually exceeded the number of blacksmiths, iron hammers and the trucking trade. In their own guilds since the beginning of the 17th century, 103 gunsmiths and locksmiths worked in Zella and 63 in Mehlis.
