Tubingen is a university town in Baden-Wuerttemberg. The city on the Neckar is about 48 kilometers south of Stuttgart. With over 27,000 students, it is the youngest city in Germany and shaped accordingly.
background
The oldest parts of the city are on the north and east flanks of the Schlossberg, a ridge running parallel to the Neckar, below Hohentübingen Castle. The Upper Town, still located on the slope and the Lower town in the valley of the Ammer, a side stream of the Neckar, form the historic old town. The upper town, once inhabited by merchants and scholars, shows richly decorated multi-storey half-timbered houses. In contrast, the lower town, inhabited by farm workers and winegrowers, the Gogen, is built much more simply and poorly.
Tübingen is one of the oldest university cities in Germany, and university buildings shaped the city from an early age. These are both late medieval buildings in the upper town and an extensive university district northeast of the old town (and a new building area for the university outside on the mountain). Schlossberg and the east bordering Österberg are built on with lush Wilhelminian style villas and also houses of student associations.
South of the Neckar, between the river and the train station, there is a business center with retail, bank branches and hotels. Beyond (south) of the railway facilities there are also industrial areas that are rather rare in Tübingen. There is comparatively industry in Tübingen. To the northwest of the old town there is still a mixed commercial area, but you can tell from the city that it is a city of civil servants and a university.
On the south side of the Neckar in the south-east of the city was a barracks area that was used for military purposes until the 1990s and has now been converted into a new district. With the neighboring suburbs, Lustnau in the east, Derendingen and Weilheim in the south, Tübingen has now grown together.

Tübingen can be easily reached by public transport as well as by private transport, as long as you know how to avoid commuting.
By plane
The closest airport is the Stuttgart Airport
(IATA: STR). There are national and international connections both within Europe and across the continent. From here you can get to Tübingen by car via the B27 in 25 minutes. There is also an "Airport Sprinter" - line 828 - to the Tübingen "Bus Station", which takes 50 minutes. The bus leaves every hour on weekdays from the bus stop, which is located in front of Terminal 1 on the arrivals level. At the weekend the departure times are more irregular.
By train
The Tübingen train station is approached by regional trains from different directions. The most important connection is the train in the Neckar valley via Plochingen to Stuttgart main station, the next long-distance traffic stop. There are hourly trains to Tübingen. The journey takes between 45 and 60 minutes. A second option is to take the S-Bahn (S1) to Herrenberg and from there to Tübingen with the Ammertallbahn. The journey takes a little over an hour and leads through a landscape that is well worth seeing. In addition, the Neckar Valley Railway can be reached from Horb and the Zollernalbbahn from Hechingen/Sigmaringen the Tübingen train station.
At the 1 Tübingen railway station once arrived, everything is within easy walking distance. The city center with the Neckar Bridge is 500 meters away. There is a taxi stop in front of the train station.
Other train stops are in the suburbs

By bus

From Stuttgart it is via the 
around 40 km to Tübingen. An alternative is that 
from Stuttgart towards Singen am Bodensee. Leave the motorway at the Herrenberg exit (B28). From here it's on the country road 
around 20 km to Tübingen.
Coming from Ulm you drive 
to the exit Tübingen / Reutlingen - B27 near the airport or choose the attractive route over the Alb on the B28 via Bad Urach and Reutlingen (recommended in case of traffic jams on the A8).
The German half-timbered street leads through the place.
By bicycle
Tübingen is right on the Hohenzollern cycle path, a beautiful bike path on the eastern edge of the Alb and on Neckar Valley way, one of the most beautiful cycle paths in southern Baden-Württemberg, if you follow one of the two paths south, you have in Esslingen Connection to the Alb-Neckar-Weg.

The old town of Tübingen is best explored on foot, as most of the parts are traffic-calmed. Parking spaces are also subject to a charge, so it is worth leaving your car behind. There are enough parking garages on the edge of the old town.
The fastest way to get around in Tübingen is by bike. The bike paths are well developed, but just as heavily frequented. However, cyclists should give preference to pushing in the pedestrian zone, as cycling is prohibited there and this prohibition is relatively tightly controlled by security services.
Otherwise, Tübingen has a very well developed bus network, which also connects the parts of the city away from the city center directly. naldo tickets are not only valid on buses, but also on trains within the area, so that you can take day trips to closer destinations such as Hohenzollern Castle at a reasonable price. The naldo area extends in the south almost to Lake Constance (Aulendorf), see above that many destinations on the western edge of the Swabian Alb and on the Alb itself can be reached with a single network map.
Tourist Attractions
The old town of Tübingen is a sight in itself. Here you will find the oldest buildings of the university, old half-timbered houses, churches and alleys. The Evangelical Abbey, the Alte Burse (Faculty of Philosophy) and the Alte Aula are not to be mentioned conclusively. Hohentübingen Castle is located on the Schlossberg above the old town. The Neckar, which is crossed by the Neckar Bridge, flows on the southern side of the old town. Here the river divides into two arms and leaves space for an island, the so-called plane tree avenue, a popular place to stroll. From here you can see the well-known, yellow-colored Hölderlin Tower, named after the poet of the same name who lived here.

Castles, chateaux and palaces
A visit from 3 Hohentübingen Castle is an absolute must. If you turn right in front of the second castle gate, after approx. 80 m you come to one of the best viewpoints over the old town of Tübingen. The castle is open until 8 p.m. in the summer and there is no entry fee. If you take the stairs opposite the main entrance and then turn right, you get to the small but beautiful castle garden. The tunnel to the right of it leads to a plateau and then to the gate on the other side of the castle. On Sunday mornings you can often watch traditional archers practicing in the palace garden below. The well-signposted hiking trail to the Wurmlinger Chapel also begins in the inner courtyard at the tunnel.
In addition to various institutes of the University of Tübingen, the castle also houses one museum. The highlights of the exhibition include the Paleolithic bird-hearth figures, the early historical finds from the region and the cast collection of Greek and Roman sculptures and the collection of the Institute for Classical Archeology, which is also located in the castle.

To the north of the old town, parts of the 1 Eberhard Karls University. From the Lustnauer Tor, Wilhelmstrasse leads past numerous faculties. Worth mentioning is the Neue Aula, the seat of the law faculty, a worth seeing, now renovated building from the turn of the 19th to the 20th century.
About 5 km outside of Tübingen is the district of Bebenhausen with a medieval monastery, well worth seeing between rolling hills. The 12 Bebenhausen Monastery can be visited.

There is a first-class burger stand, the "X" (next to the city museum), in which the burgers are freshly fried and topped. This is very popular with students and is often the last stop on a pub crawl, which is why it is very busy from 0.30 a.m.

The "El-Chico" is located in the same building as the Neckarmüller, one floor higher. A trendy Mexican-style pub that does not treat the wallet very carefully.
In the city center you will find the "Alt-Tübingen", which offers beer from clay jugs and a "song rate competition" on Monday evenings, in which the winning group is offered a free round of schnapps. Tübingen is a city of pubs, in the city center you don't need more than 5 minutes to the next pub, so it is best to get an idea of the numerous and different pubs in Tübingen with an extensive pub crawl.
