The small town Wallenfels in the district Kronach, in the western Franconian Forest Located in the valley of the Wild Rodach, it is best known for its summer raft trips for guests on the Rodach.

The driver drives from the direction of Bamberg on the federal road B173 via Lichtenfels and Kronach; from the direction of Nuremberg via the autobahn A9 until departure Bad Berneck / Himmelkron, then on the B303 Direction Kronach to Zettlitz and there turn right; from the direction of Saxony via the A72 until departure North courtyard and then on the B173 via Schwarzenbach am Wald.

  • It is located on the Wilder Rodach Hammer grinder. It has been in operation again as a sawmill since its general overhaul in 1997.

activities

  • From May to September there is every Saturday on the Wilder Rodach on an approximately 5 km long route between Schnappenhammer and Wallenfels (Flößerhaus) Raft trips for tourists instead. More information about the Raft trips, at the tourist office of the city of Wallenfels. Each raft has room for around 25-30 people, and a total of over 500 people can take part in each raft trip.
  • Nordic walkingIn the "Upper Rodachtal" there has been a nordic active walking center since 2006. A total of 35 km of signposted routes are available. Three routes start in Stone meadows, a section in Wallenfels and a section in Nordhalben above the Mauthaus drinking water reservoir.
  • Mountain bike, In Wallenfels and the surrounding area, two mountain bike routes are signposted, whereby care has been taken to ensure that the route characteristics meet the requirements of the ADFC (General German Bicycle Club). The tours, which are quite demanding, have great vantage points and beautiful landscapes.

G'stopfta Rumm are a specialty that is only available in Wallenfels. The sour side dish to poultry or pork dishes is only available in the winter months. After the harvest time, in October and November, the ingredients are chopped up into pieces the size of barley grain and then placed in layers in a barrel, salted and tamped (stuffed). After the fermentation period of several days, the "Gschtopften Rumm" are fermented like sauerkraut and can be further processed. The mixture consists of field beets, savoy cabbage, white cabbage, yellow beets and leeks. In the restaurants Egersmühle and Roseneck you can try the Rumm until around Easter. There is also the option to take a double serving home with you.

Wallenfels is peppered with traditional inns that tempt you with good home-made snacks.

Practical advice

trips

  • The Ködeltalsperre is a drinking water reservoir about 15 km away at Mauthaus (between Steinwiesen and Nordhalben). It is a popular destination, the continuously paved, 11 km long circular route is ideal for cyclists and skaters.
  • Kronach (14 km west, B 173) - the most important town on the railway line from Lichtenfels to Saalfeld in Thuringia is also a district town; Veste Rosenberg.
  • Schwarzenbach am Wald (16 km east, B 173) - at the foot of the Döbraberges, the highest mountain in the Franconian Forest at 794 m.
  • Stadtsteinach (16 km south) - located at the exit of the Steinach valley; Worth seeing, under monument protection standing place.
  • Nordhalben (17 km north) - market town with traditional lace making.
  • Bad Steben (20 km northeast) - State bath with radium-containing springs mentioned as early as 1444.
