The small town Johanngeorgenstadt is located in the Ore Mountains, right on the border with Czech Republic. It was founded in 1654 by Bohemian refugees and experienced a rapid rise after 1945 thanks to uranium ore mining. The population increased - only comparable to a gold prospecting town in the Wild West - to around 45,000 by 1953 and then fell rapidly again. Today fewer than 5000 people live in Johanngeorgenstadt.
