The small town Weida is lying in Thuringian Vogtland, 10 km south of Gera. Weida, mentioned as Weitaha as early as 824, appears as a city around 1080 and was the seat of the bailiffs of Weida, who sold the city and the surrounding area to Meissen in 1410.

By train

Weida is relatively well connected by rail. Regional trains of the Erfurt Railway run hourly in Weida on the Leipzig - Gera - Saalfeld and Leipzig - Gera - Hof routes. They run united until Weida and are separated in the station. In addition to the Weida station, the line to Hof also has Weida middle and Weida old town two more stops closer to the city center.

In the street

Weida is on the B 92 from Gera to Greiz. In the vicinity of the city, the B 92 is bundled for about 2 km with the B 175, which in turn joins the federal motorway 9 Zwickau connects.

Tourist Attractions

Osterburg

The cityscape is dominated by the 1 Osterburg shaped, which towers over Weida and can already be seen from the highway in the south. The Osterburg is essentially Romanesque and has a mighty, 54 m high keep. The subsequent building has late Gothic origins. The courtyard and garden are used for events. The castle also houses the local history museum.

Below the castle is the old town with the City Churchwhich dates from the 13th century, but was destroyed in the Thirty Years War and had to be rebuilt. Today it has a baroque interior. However, the oldest church in town is the one further south Widenkirche (Kirchgasse) with origins from the middle of the 12th century. It was also destroyed in the Thirty Years War, but unlike the town church, it was not rebuilt, so that only the ruins have been preserved to this day. The Gothic design of the choir still looks very elegant, and the tower was covered with a roof in 1997.

The two bundled federal highways pass under the further north of the castle and the old town Oschützal viaduct, a 185 m long and 28 m high lattice bridge over which the railway from / to Mehltheuer ran until 1983. A memorial plaque was placed on a pillar next to the road.

Practical advice

trips

In Burkersdorf, 3 km west on the B 175, one Equestrian facility. Also 3 km west of the old town Aumatalsperre1 that is suitable for bathing. The place is located 5 km to the northeast in the Elstertal Wish village (B 92 dir. Gera, turn right after the exit sign). The road bridge that crosses the White Elster in Wünschendorf is a shingle-roofed wooden bridge from 1786. The Premonstratensian Monastery of Mildenfurth, founded in 1193, is still on the left side of the Elster. Another attraction is the fairy tale forest, a miniature ensemble powered by water power. South of Wünschendorf begins the most charming part of the Elstertal, which invites you to hike and linger.

The next bigger places in the area are:

  • Berga (10 km east, B 175 direction Zwickau) - the landmark of the small town in the Elstertal is a centuries-old oak.
  • Gera (13 km north, B 92) - the next larger city is the center of East Thuringia and was the venue for the Federal Horticultural Show in 2007.
  • Zeulenroda shoot (14 km south, direction Auma via Staitz or B 92 direction Greiz) - Winkelmann's house, built in block construction and the “Waikiki” water park.
  • Auma (16 km southwest, via Staitz) - small town on the river of the same name; two town halls and the Saxon post mile column on the market square.
  • Triptis (18 km to the west, B 175 and from Großebersdorf B 2) - small town located on the eastern edge of the Orlasenke and directly on the A 9; preserved keep of Triptis Castle.
  • Greiz (20 km southeast, B 92) - former residence of the Princes Reuss a.L. with three locks; picturesquely situated in the Elstertal (Upper and Lower Castle and the summer palace in Greizer Park).
