kassel is after Frankfurt and Wiesbaden the third largest city in Hesse. With 200,000 inhabitants, the documenta city is the cultural and economic center North Hesse. in the direct environment the city has about another 120,000 inhabitants.
The historic old town was largely destroyed in the Second World War. Many intact buildings were also torn down as Kassel was being converted into a "car-friendly" city. For those interested in architecture, Kassel's city center primarily offers typical functional buildings from the 1950s, such as the State Theater, Germany's oldest pedestrian zone or the regional council. Nevertheless, with the Vorderen West there is an entire district with old buildings from the Wilhelminian era. This is more vivid for the tourist than the functional city center.
Kassel owns with the Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe and the Karlsaue two important parks that are definitely worth a visit. The mountain park with Wilhelmshöhe Castle, Löwenburg and Herkules is particularly unique in the world. Since June 2013 the mountain park has been allowed to hold the title World Heritage wear. The extensive and diverse museum landscape is also worth visiting. Kassel is also a "green" city. Due to its location in the densely wooded Habichtswald, but also due to the greenery in the urban area, Kassel is a large city with many attractive recreational areas.
The Brothers Grimm worked in Kassel for a long time. As a result, Kassel is now one of the most important stops at the German fairy tale route.

Cornerstones of the city's history
The city was first mentioned on February 18, 913 as "Actum Chassella". The document bears the signature of King Konrad I. At that time there was probably a royal court at the site of the city palace (today the location of the regional council). In 1189 Kassel received city rights. In the 12th century Kassel belonged to the Landgraves of Thuringia. The landgrave died in 1274 w: Heinrich Raspe IV. childless despite three marriages. His niece Sophie insists that her young son Heinrich Hessen should become an independent Landgraviate. In 1378 the independent "cities" Altstadt, Freiheit and Neustadt, which were geographically close together, were merged into one city. In 1576 Philip the Magnanimous divided the Landgraviate of Hesse among his four sons as Hesse-Kassel, Hesse-Marburg, Hesse-Darmstadt and Hesse-Rheinfels. As a result, the position of Hesse in the empire was permanently weakened. Coined around 1700 Landgrave Karl of Hessen-Kassel through intensive construction work in the Bergpark and in the Karlsaue the city continues to this day. In 1936, in the last wave of "incorporation", the urban area received its present size. In contrast to many other major German cities, Kassel was not expanded again after the Second World War. During the Second World War, Kassel was badly damaged, especially in the devastating air raid on October 22, 1943, the half-timbered architecture that had previously prevailed in the old town was almost completely destroyed. Since the reconstruction, modern, functional architecture has shaped the city center. In 1953, in the new city center in the functional post-war style, the first pedestrian zone in Germany was established with the stairs street. In 1955 the Federal Garden Show was opened in Kassel. In 1981 there was another federal horticultural show. The Fuldaaue location at that time is still a popular local recreation area today. The linguists and literary scholars Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm worked in Kassel for a long time. From 1812/1813 they also published their well-known collection of children's and household tales here. Collecting fairy tales was just a professional activity for the Grimms. The brothers also achieved great merits through their work on German studies. For example, Jacob Grimm published an extensive work on German grammar. In Leipzig they later worked on the creation of a German dictionary. The Grimms lived in Kassel and others. a few years in the northern gatehouse on Wilhelmshöher Allee. Today the Grimm Memorial is right across from the State Museum. Dorothea Viehmann (1755-1815). She told the Brothers Grimm about 40 folk tales. The Brothers Grimm added 36 of them to their well-known collection of fairy tales. Dorothea Pierson was born as the daughter of an innkeeper in Rengershausen. In 1777 she married the tailor Nikolaus Viehmann. In 1787 she moved with him into a small half-timbered house in Niederzwehren. By the way, her father's inn and brewery is now located directly on the A 49 motorway and is part of the Hütt brewery (Approach by car via the Baunatal-Nord exit).
Districts
The city of Kassel is structured into 23 districts. The smallest district in terms of population is Nordshausen, which looks like a village and has around 2000 inhabitants. Kassel terms and abbreviations
In Kassel the residents are divided into three "groups":
- Kasseler: Designation for people who have moved in.
- Kasselaner: Local term for people who were born in Kassel.
- Kasselaner: This is the name of the "natives" of the city. This is the group of people who have lived in the city for at least two generations (so the parents must also have been born in Kassel).
In the city, some abbreviations are used for streets, squares and buildings:
- Aue - Karlsaue (Baroque park in the heart of the city).
- Buga - Large, semi-artificial lake landscape on the other side of the Fulda (next to the floodplain), where you can swim for free. It was created for the Federal Horticultural Show in 1981.
- Goethe - For Goetheanlage, a park in the front west
- Hopla - Holländischer Platz - is located north of the city center at the university (the abbreviation is therefore often used by students), is only a square in name due to the widening of Holländischer Straße. A constant source of confusion for tourists: the KuBa is the main station of Kassel, but in fact the Wilhelmshöhe station fulfills the tasks of a main station.

- Willi-Allee - Wilhelmshöher Allee (main axis of the city between Bergpark and city center)

- From airport Frankfurt(IATA: FRA) The journey time with the ICE to the long-distance train station Kassel-Wilhelmshöhe is between 1:38 (direct ICE from the long-distance train station at the airport) and up to a maximum of 2:30 h with a change in Frankfurt Hbf. 1 Wilhelmshöhe long-distance train station

Officially, the ICE stop is only called "Bahnhof Wilhelmshöhe". In Kassel, however, there are often questions about how to get to the "main station" where the long-distance trains leave. Kassel Central Station
The 2 Kassel Central Station (Kassel main train station). who also got the name Kulturbahnhof is the hub for regional traffic in the region. There are direct connections to Fulda, Frankfurt am Main, Hagen, Goettingen (does not drive over Wilhelmshöhe).
The interface of the Regiotram with the railway network, a combination of regional and tram, which runs from the surrounding area from the railway network into the city on the tram tracks. In the street
Kassel is on the federal highways 
(Hamburg - Würzburg), 
(Kassel - Dortmund) and 
(Kassel - Neuental). The A 49 is the "Stadtautobahn", the exits "Auestadion" and "Waldau" are closest to the city center. Bergpark and Wilhelmshöhe Castle, the Hercules and the Wilhelmshöhe ICE train station can, depending on the direction of travel, be better reached via the A 44, Kassel-Bad Wilhelmshöhe exit.
By boat

By bicycle
Kassel is on Fulda cycle path, the one for cyclists with the Weser cycle path from Hann. Münden as part of the national route D 9 represents an important north-south connection through the German low mountain range.
You can go east to Thuringia Herkules-Wartburg cycle path use. The somewhat mountainous route ends after 110 km in Eisenach. Here there is a connection to that Long-distance cycle route network of Thuringia.

Local public transport
Kassel has a well-developed tram network and a dense bus network. The network is operated by Kasseler Verkehrs-Gesellschaft AG. The ticket machines are located in the vehicles of the trams. The tram is often referred to as a tram in Kassel.
The Regiotram In contrast, as a light rail system, it connects the city of Kassel with the surrounding area. Thanks to the shared use of tram and rail routes, you can get from the city center to the region and vice versa without changing trains.

- Single ticket adults: 3.90 € (up to 3 children under 6 years are included),
- Single ticket children: (6-14 years): € 2.30
- MultiTicket Single (one person; up to 3 children under 6 years of age are included, otherwise time regulations as for multi-ticket): € 7.10
- Multiticket: If you are traveling as a couple or as a family at the weekend, the inexpensive multi-ticket for € 9 is particularly ideal. The ticket can be used by 2 adults alone and as a family ticket (2 adults and up to 3 children). The card is valid in the "Kassel Plus" tariff area on weekdays 24 hours after validation and bought on Friday from 2 pm even for the whole weekend (more than two full days). If Friday and / or Monday is a public holiday, the ticket is still valid in full on these days, e.g. Easter for a full four days in a row. More expensive multi-tickets are also available for further outlying zones of the transport association.(Tariff December 2018)

- KasselCard - The card is only sold through the tourist information office, but is an inexpensive alternative, especially during the week, when two people are on the road for several days. On foot
All the sights of the city center can be easily reached on foot from Kassel's main train station (maximum radius of one kilometer). Large parts of the city center are pedestrianized. Even from the main train station to the orangery in the Karlsaue, it is just under a kilometer via stairs street and Friedrichsplatz.
From the Wilhelmshöhe long-distance train station, on the other hand, you can go to the Mountain park walk, which can already be seen from the station forecourt (about 1.5 km, but going uphill). The tram line 1 is of course more convenient.
City tours
Since 2010 there have been fixed events in Kassel lasting around 2.5 hours City tours in the double-decker bus. Boarding is possible at all 10 stations, "Hop-on-Hop-off" is also possible (get off at each stop and continue with a later bus). Twelve languages are offered.

In Kassel, bicycles are slowly becoming an attractive alternative to exploring the city by bus and train. However, there is still some catching up to do in the city with regard to the infrastructure for bicycles compared to other major German cities. If you know the right routes away from the big traffic aisles, you can already explore Kassel by bike today.
- "Nextbike" bike rental system in Kassel. The station-based rental system offers a total of 400 bikes for rental at 56 locations in the city. Nextbike has been the successor to the first "Konrad" system since the beginning of 2018.

- Route network: In 2011, the route network in the area of the city of Kassel was re-signposted, so that now finally also those unfamiliar with the area beautiful alternative routes away from the dangerous and noisy main roads. Important inner-city bike routes from the Wilhelmshöhe long-distance train station:
- Route Wilhelmshöhe long-distance train station - city center / Fulda cycle path to the north: Under no circumstances use the busy Wilhelmshöher Allee here. To the north, parallel to the road, the Herkules-Wartburg-Radweg runs away from the heavy traffic. Here it is mostly in 30 km / h zones through the attractive front west. Who from the long-distance train station to the Fulda cycle path R 1 direction Hann. Münden, it is best to use this route as well. At the Auedamm at the orangery you finally come across the R 1.
- Route Fernbahnhof Wilhelmshöhe - Karlsaue / Fuldaradweg heading south: From the western exit of the long-distance train station you can easily reach the Siebenbergen island along the Bertha-von-Suttner-Straße bike path and via quiet paths in Schönfeld Park Karlsaue to reach. On the way you can z. B. look past the botanical garden. If you want to head south to the R 1, it is best to stay on the western side of Fulda as far as the Neue Mühle at the power station. At the Neue Mühle, the Fulda can then be crossed on a foot and cycle bridge. On the other side of Fulda you come to the Fulda Cycle Path R 1. After a long period of rain, however, the gravel paths in the park are covered with puddles.
In the street
Kassel has a well-developed road network. However, as in many other cities, there is a lot of traffic during commuter times. It is therefore less stressful to leave the car for trips in Kassel and to use the well-developed local public transport. In the city center, for example, many routes can be easily covered on foot, provided you have booked a room here. For those who want to do sport, the bicycle is also a possible alternative.
Park
Kassel's city center has various parking facilities, all of which are chargeable. Informed about the parking regulations and fees of the urban street parking zones here the city of Kassel.
The parking garages, which are mostly privately managed, have different fees. On the other hand, you can still park free of charge in the large car park below Wilhelmshöhe Palace in the Bergpark and up on the Herkules mountain. Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe
The Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe is Europe's largest mountain park with 240 hectares. At the end of June 2013, the park was awarded the title "World Heritage Site" as being unique in the world. A highlight of the park are the water features from the time of absolutism. You can follow the path of the water from the Oktogon am Herkules to the fountain pond on foot via several stations. Outstanding is the large cascade, at the top of which is the 1 Hercules, Kassel's landmark, stands. The mountain park turns into a landscape garden from the Neptune basin. A little reminiscent of an "18th century Disneyland" 2 Löwenburg, a 1: 2 scale replica of a castle ruin in the Gothic style for the romantics, the aqueduct, which was also built as a ruin for the fans of antiquity and a number of smaller temples for the Hellenists.
In the middle and in the center of a line of sight that leads from Herkules over Wilhelmshöher Allee to almost the Kassel town hall, that is Wilhelmshöhe Castle, once residence of the Landgraves and later Electors of Hesse-Kassel.
It is of course interesting see the water features in action, which always start on Wednesdays, Sundays and public holidays from May 1st to October 3rd at 2.30 p.m. at Hercules. In the city centre
Friedrichsplatz
The 3 Friedrichsplatz is located on Königsstraße and is one of the largest inner-city squares in Germany at around 340 x 112 m. The square, which was laid out in the 18th century, was named after Landgrave Friedrich II from the House of Hessen-Kassel. A historical model of the then magnificent Friedrichsplatz is well worth seeing in the city museum. With the Second World War, Friedrichsplatz also lost its historical development.
- At the place is the Art gallery Fridericianum (see section Museums). Incidentally, inconspicuous names carved in stone can be found directly on the stairs to the Fridericianum. These names are part of a memorial for people who died of AIDS.
- Landgrave monument Frederick II - The monument is opposite the Fridericianum. The statue was begun in 1783 by the sculptor Johann August Nahl the Elder and then completed by his son. Originally the monument stood in the middle of the square. After the Second World War, it was moved to its current location on the south side of the open space.
- They are on the eastern part of the square State Theater as well as the Documenta hall. You can also find the work of art here "Frame construction" (also popularly called Auefenster). The walk-in work of art was erected for documenta 6 in 1977. When you climb the iron footbridge, you leave the "great view through the first frame" and look through a second, smaller steel "picture frame" at the central building of the orangery. In the middle of the orangery there is also the planetarium of the astronomical-physical cabinet. The Friedrichs- oder, built in 1782, stood in this area until 1907 Auetor. After that, it had to make way for the royal theater.
- By the way, you have a beautiful view of Friedrichsplatz from the upper parking deck of the Galeria Kaufhof (see section "Viewpoints").
The 4 Treppenstraße ist die erste Fußgängerzone Deutschlands. Sie wurde bereits am 9. November 1953 eröffnet. Das nüchterne Flair der 1950er Jahre herrscht auch noch heute in der Treppenstraße. Der Straßenzug steht als Nachkriegsbauwerk daher auch unter Denkmalschutz. Auf den grünen Podesten kann man gut bei einem Kaffee das hektische Treiben der Großstadt beobachten. Die "Straße" ist 275 m lang und besitzt bei 104 Stufen 15,5 m Höhenunterschied. Wer sich über die etwas unpassenden Stufen wundert: Die Treppen entsprechen nicht den heute gültigen Baunormen für öffentliche Treppenbauwerke. Heute wird das Bauwerk aber nicht nur positiv gesehen: So ist die fußläufige Direktverbindung von Hauptbahnhof zum Friedrichsplatz für Rollstuhlfahrer aufgrund der steilen Podeste nicht nutzbar. Des Weiteren wirkt die Treppenstraße trotz ihrer Funktion als wichtige Fußgängerverbindung in der Stadtmitte oft relativ wenig belebt. Location: Der Treppenzug führt vom Scheidemannplatz südöstlich des Hauptbahnhofs bis zum Friedrichsplatz an der Königsstraße.
Sehenswert ist das schlossartige 5 Rathaus am Beginn der oberen Königsstraße. Der Bau wurde zwischen 1905 und 1909 im neubarocken Stil nach den Entwürfen von Architekt Karl Roth errichtet (Baukosten 3,2 Mio Reichsmark).
Die zentrale Einkaufsstraße ist Fußgängerzone, beginnt am Rathaus (Königsplatz), verläuft entlang Straßenbahnenschienen und bietet vielfältige Einkaufsmöglichkeiten.
Alle 15 Minuten ist der 6 Königsplatz zentraler Treffpunkt von Straßenbahnen in alle relevanten Richtungen. Am kreisförmigen Platz liegen Cafés, Kneipen und das moderne Einkaufszentrum "City Point". Der Platz ist von Platanen gesäumt und im Sommerhalbjahr sind die Wasserspiele in Betrieb (auch "Elefantenrüssel" genannt). Während der Adventszeit findet auf dem Platz jährlich der Kasseler Märchenweihnachtsmarkt instead of.
Der Königsplatz wurde 1767 vom Kasseler Oberhofbaumeister und Architekt Simon Louis du Ry created. Simon Louis du Ry gilt als einer der bedeutendsten Baumeister des Klassizismus. Der Platz ist nach Landgraf Friedrich I. (1676–1751) benannt. Landgraf Friedrich I. war zwischen 1720 bis 1751 König von Schweden.
The 7 Druselturm nordöstlich des Königsplatzes ist eines der letzten größeren Überreste des mittelalterlichen Kassel. Er diente u. a. als Gefängnis. Das Gebäude wurde 1415 errichtet und war Teil der Stadtbefestigung. Das Bauwerk ist zu regulären Öffnungszeiten nicht zugänglich.Das Bauwerk hat seinen Namen übrigens vom Druselkanal. Dieser kleine Kanal zweigte früher zu Zeiten der Kasseler Stadtbefestigung etwa auf der Höhe des heutigen Fernbahnhof vom Bachlauf der Drusel ab. Am höchsten Punkt der Kasseler Stadtbefestigung speiste man das Wasser in die Verteidigungsgräben vor den Mauern ein. Dort stand damals der heutige Druselturm. Fuldawasser hätte man sehr aufwendig in die teilweise recht hoch über dem Flussniveau liegenden Gräben pumpen müssen. So war die Nutzung von Wasser aus dem Habichtswald unter Nutzung des natürlichen Druselgefälles eine clevere Lösung des Problems. Ferner wurde das Wasser aus dem Speicherteich am Druselturm auch zum Spülen der Gassen genutzt.
Bedeutende Kirchen der Stadt
Durch die Zerstörungen im Zweiten Weltkrieg wurden in Kassel viele Kirchen vernichtet. Unter anderem daher spielen die Kirchen heute in der Rangfolge der Kasseler Sehenswürdigkeiten im Vergleich zu anderen Städten eine untergeordnete Rolle. Es gibt aber für Interessierte dennoch einige sehenswerte Bauten:
- 8 Martinskirche unweit des Königsplatzes - erbaut ab 1330. Der Bau ist heute mit Platz für 1.400 Gläubige die größte Kirche der Stadt. Nach den Zerstörungen des Zweiten Weltkriegs wurde das Gotteshaus mit modernen Elementen wieder aufgebaut. In der Gruft der Kirche wurden zwischen dem 14. und 18. Jahrhundert die Landgrafen zu Kassel beigesetzt. Täglich von 9-17 Uhr zu besichtigen.
- 9 Luther Church - heute eine Kirchenruine am Lutherplatz: Ab 1897 im neugotischen Stil erbaut. Der Bau wurde im Zweiten Weltkrieg zerstört. Der erhaltene Turm ist mit 76 m aber immer noch das höchste Gebäude der Stadt. Zu besonderen Veranstaltungen konnte der Kirchturm in der Vergangenheit über 156 Stufen bestiegen werden. Mit Stand Februar 2019 ist der Zugang unklar (die Internetseite des Fördervereins zum Turm existiert nicht mehr). Einen Besuch am Lutherkirchturm kann man sich mit Stand Februar 2019 also eigentlich sparen.

- 10 Brüderkirche - eher unscheinbarer Bau am Steinweg, aber älteste Kirche der Stadt. Der Bau wurde zusammen mit dem Kloster bereits 1376 fertig gestellt. Das Gotteshaus wird heute u.a. für Musikveranstaltungen genutzt.
Karlsaue
Die Karlsaue ist eine barocke Parkanlage im Herzen der Stadt. Zusammen mit der Fuldaaue stellt sie die "grüne Lunge" von Kassel dar. Sehenswert sind u. a. die Orangerie mit Marmorbad, der Aueteich und die Blumeninsel Siebenbergen.

Kassel besitzt für seine Stadtgröße eine recht große und vielfältige Museumslandschaft.

- 11 Schloss Wilhelmshöhe mit Gemäldegalerie "Alte Meister" und Antiken-Sammlung. on Schloss Wilhelmshöhe.
- 12 Gewächshaus am Schloss Wilhelmshöhe. An tristen, kalten Wintertagen kann man hier ins Warme flüchten. Geöffnet ist nur im Winterhalbjahr. Infos siehe im Artikel zum Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe.
- 13 Fridericianum. Das Museum Fridericianum, heute Kunsthalle Fridericianum, wurde bereits im Jahre 1779 eröffnet und gilt als der erste öffentliche Museumsbau auf dem europäischen Kontinent. Es finden wechselnde Kunstausstellungen statt. Im Fridericianum präsentiert auch der KasselerKunstVerein seine Ausstellungen. Diese können im Rahmen der regulären Öffnungszeiten mit besucht werden (kein Zusatzeintritt). Das im Juni 2016 nach Sanierung und Erweiterung wieder eröffnete Museum zeigt auf drei Stockwerken eine nach Zeitepochen geordnete Sammlung zur Geschichte Kassels vom Mittelalter bis zur Neuzeit mit insbesondere hochinteressanten Einsichten in die Zeit vor der Zerstörung der Stadt im Zweiten Weltkrieg. Die anschauliche Sammlung umfasst einige interessante Modelle der Stadt. In einem kleinen Kinosaal werden zudem zu jeder vollen Stunde Filme zu unterschiedlichen Themen über Kassel gezeigt. - 15 Museum für Sepulkralkultur, Weinbergstraße 25-27, 34117 Kassel. Das bisher einzige deutsche Museum für Grabsteine, Särge und Bestattungskultur liegt auf dem Weinberg. - Das 1916 wiedereröffnete 16 Hessische Landesmuseum, Brüder-Grimm-Platz 5, 34117 Kassel. bietet auf 4000 m² einen Rundgang durch 300.000 Jahre hessische Landesgeschichte von den Anfängen menschlicher Besiedelung bis in die Gegenwart. Nach der Sanierung kann jetzt auch der Turm bestiegen werden der einen schönen Ausblick auf die Stadt bietet.Geöffnet: Di - So und Feiertags: 10-17 Uhr; Do bis 20 Uhr. Ausnahmen: 24., 25. und 31. - Das 1923 gegründete Deutsche Tapetenmuseum. das heute über 23.000 Objekte umfasst, war zuletzt im Hessischen Landesmuseum untergebracht. Seit der Sanierung ist es heimatlos, ein Neubau ist beschlossen, die Fertigstellung am Standort des ehemaligen Verwaltungsgerichtshofes ist für 2023 geplant. Kleine Teile der Museumsbestände werden in unregelmäßig stattfindenden Sonderschauen an unterschiedlichen Orten präsentiert. Ein Onlinekatalog findet sich auf der Museumsseite.
- 17 Sammlung angewandte Kunst, Wilhelmshöher Allee in der Torwache am Hessischen Landesmuseum. Zu sehen sind hier Ausstellungsstücke aus den Kunstepochen Historismus, Jugendstil, Bauhaus, Art Déco, Designobjekte aus den 1950er Jahren sowie aus der Postmoderne.Geöffnet: Di - So 10-17 Uhr.Preis: 2,- €, Studenten 1,- €; Kinder bis 18 J. frei.
- 18 Neue Galerie, Schöne Aussicht 1. Das generalsanierte Museum ist im November 2011 wiedereröffnet worden. Der Museumsbau wurde zwischen 1871 und 1877 errichtet. Im Zweiten Weltkrieg wurde das Gebäude stark beschädigt. Die Sammlung der Moderne hat ihren Schwerpunkt in der Kunst des 19.-21. Jahrhunderts, dazu gehören auch eine Reihe von documenta-Erwerbungen. Herzstück ist ein von Joseph Beuys 1976 persönlich eingerichteter Raum mit einer Installation und etlichen weiteren Exponaten. Führungen: im Nov. u. - 19 Grimmwelt Kassel, Weinbergstraße 21. Tel.: (0)561 5986190. Seit dem 5. September 2015 ist das neue, multimediale Erlebnismuseum "Grimmwelt" auf dem Weinberg geöffnet. Der Neubau beherbergt eine umfangreiche Ausstellung über die Werke und das Schaffen der Gebrüder Grimm. Anhand von Buchstaben des Alphabets wird der Besucher in 25 Stationen durch die Schau geführt. Die Ausstellung besitzt viele Multimediaexponate, aber auch klassische Sammlungselemente bis hin zu Bereichen, die einer Kunstausstellung ähneln. Das Museum soll alle Zielgruppen ansprechen - von Familien bis hin zu fachwissenschaftlich interessierten Grimmfreunden. Neben der Dauerausstellung gibt es einen Sonderschaubereich. Gastronomie findet sich direkt im Gebäude. Auf dem Neubau gibt es eine frei zugängliche Aussichtsterrasse mit Blick über das südliche Kasseler Becken. - 20 Naturkundemuseum im Ottoneum, Steinweg 2. Tel.: (0)561 7874066. Das Haus zeigt eine Ausstellung zur Erdgeschichte und Natur in Nordhessen, daneben gibt es laufend Sonderausstellungen. In der Dauerausstellung sind viele präparierte einheimische Tierarten zu sehen. In schönen Dioramen (Lebensraummodellen) werden diese Tiere hinter Glas präsentiert. "Star" ist sicherlich das nachgebildete Mammut in Originalgröße nebst Jungtier, das in der Eiszeitausstellung zu finden ist. Einige interaktive Elemente sind im Museum ebenfalls zu finden (u. a. Filme und Vogelstimmen, die auf Knopfdruck ertönen). Eine Rarität im Museum ist ferner die berühmte Holzbibliothek von Carl Schildbach, die im Rahmen eines documenta13-Projektes einen neuen Rahmen erhalten hat, sowie das Herbarium Ratzenberger aus dem 16. Jahrhundert, welches als ältestes systematisches Herbarium Europas gilt. Zu sehen ist auch der sogenannte Goethe-Elefant, ein vollständiges Elefantenskelett, welches schon J.W. Goethe zu Studienzwecken diente. Das Gebäude selbst wurde 1603-1606 unter Landgraf Moritz als erstes feststehendes Theatergebäude Deutschlands errichtet. Nach seinem Lieblingssohn "Otto" gab Moritz dem Gebäude den Namen "Ottoneum". Ab 1690 diente das Haus als Herberge für die landgräfliche Kunst- und Naturaliensammlung. Nach Zerstörungen im Zweiten Weltkrieg, bei der große Teile der Sammlungen verloren gingen, baute die Stadt Kassel das Gebäude wieder auf und nutzte es fortan als Naturkundemuseum. 1994-97 erfolgte die letzte Umgestaltung/Renovierung.Geöffnet: Di − Sa u. - 21 Orangerie mit Astronomisch-Physikalischen Kabinett. Das Museum hat seinen Sitz in der Orangerie im Staatspark Karlsaue. Gezeigt werden in fünf Ausstellungsbereichen historische Uhren, Fernrohre und alte Stücke zu Geodäsie, Physik beziehungsweise zu Mathematik und Informationstechnik. - 22 Technik-Museum Kassel, Wolfhager Straße 109. Das im August 2010 eröffnete Museum hat seinen Sitz in Hallen des ehemaligen Henschelwerks Rothenditmold im gleichnamigen Stadtteil. Das Museum stellt auf 2500 Quadratmetern die regionale Technikgeschichte der letzten 300 Jahre dar. Zu sehen sind u. a. historische Schienenfahrzeuge (Lokomotiven) aus der Produktion von Henschel, ein kompletter Löschzug aus Henschel Feuerwehrfahrzeugen, aber auch der Transrapid. Weitere Sammlungsgebiete des Museums sind die Mobilitäts-, Luftfahrt,- und Energietechnik. Auch die Elektro-, Mess-, und Regeltechnik sowie die Informatik werden im Museum behandelt. Ferner werden Exponate zur Konstruktions- und Maschinenbautechnik gesammelt. Seit November 2014 ist die Ausstellung um eine weitere Halle erweitert, in der zahlreiche historische Straßenbahnen der Kasseler Verkehrbetriebe ausgestellt sind, die bislang in Depots vor sich hin gerostet haben. - 23 Spohr Museum, Franz-Ulrich-Straße 6 (Kulturbahnhof Südflügel). Tel.: 49 (0)561 766 25 28, Email: [email protected]. Das Museum zeigt eine Ausstellung über den herausragenden Musiker und Komponisten Louis Spohr. Louis Spohr (1784-1859) wirkte ab 1822 als Hofkapellmeister in Kassel. Die moderne Ausstellung hält auch einige interaktive Elemente bereit. So gibt es eine Dirigierstation, eine Magische Violine und eine Station zur synästhetischen Wahrnehmung. Öffnungszeiten: Sa - Mo von 10 bis 16 Uhr. Di bis Fr ist nach Vereinbarung geöffnet.
- 24 Murhardsche Bibliothek, Brüder-Grimm-Platz 4A. Im historischen Gebäude der Murhardschen Bibliothek, die zur Universitätsbibliothek Kassel gehört, befindet sich die berühmte Handschriftensammlung. Eine kleine Auswahl bedeutender Schriften - darunter das w:Hildebrandlied und eine frühe Gutenberg-Bibel - können im Ausstellungstresor besichtigt werden. Aufgrund von Umbauarbeiten ist die Handschriftensammlung voraussichtlich bis 2020[outdated] closed..Geöffnet: Öffnungszeiten Tresor: Mo., Mi., Fr. 14-17 Uhr.
- 25 Kasseler Bademuseum, Sternbergstraße (an der Fulda). Das Kasseler Bademuseum ist im ehemaligen Kurbad Jungborn direkt an der Fulda beheimatet. Die Reste der letzten Kasseler Flussbadeanstalt wurden zwischen 2005 und 2011 saniert. Die Flussbadeanstalten an der Fulda entstanden mit Beginn des 19. Jahrhunderts. Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts erreichten sie ihren Höhepunkt. Das Bademuseum zeigt eine Ausstellung zu Fluss- und privaten Reinigungsbädern. Zu sehen ist u. a. ein Nachbau eines privaten Badezimmers aus den 1830er Jahren. Des Weiteren gibt es eine Sammlung von Gegenständen zum Thema "Bad". Ferner hat im Gebäude ein Café mit Flussterrasse seinen Sitz.Geöffnet: im Sommerhalbjahr von Mi bis So von 14 - 17 Uhr.Preis: Eintritt frei, um eine Spende wird gebeten.
- 26 Energietechnikmuseum "Wasserkraftwerk Neue Mühle", Neue Mühle 8, 34134 Kassel-Niederzwehren. Tel.: (0)561 782-2149. Das Museum hat seinen Sitz am südlichen Stadtrand von Kassel in einem historischen Wasserkraftwerk. Die Anlage, die angeschaut werden kann, ist noch heute in Betrieb. Des Weiteren informiert die Ausstellung über die Strom-, Gas- und Wasserversorgung von Kassel. Das Museum ist zu den Öffnungszeiten ein schönes Ziel für eine kleine Radtour ab der Stadtmitte. Übrigens: Wer im Museum ist, einfach mal die Betreuer ansprechen, sie geben gerne Auskunft, setzen die alten Wasserpumpen im Pumpenhaus in Gang und führen auch in die Bereiche, die noch in Betrieb sind.Geöffnet: Mi 10-16 Uhr sowie jeden ersten Sonntag im Monat von 10-16 Uhr, Gruppenführungen auf Anfrage auch zu anderen Zeiten.Price: free entry.
- 27 Henschel-Museum Sammlung, Wolfhager Straße 109. Tel.: (0)561 8017250. Das Museum und die Sammlung beschäftigt sich mit der wechselvollen Geschichte der Henschelwerke, insbesondere der Eisenbahn Industriegeschichte vom Drache until Transrapid. Die Sammlungen umfassen Modelle und vor allem auch die Konstruktionszeichnungen der bei Henschel gebauten Lokomotiven, ferner alte Fotos und historische Bücher.Geöffnet: Am ersten Sa So des Monats von 14 - 17 Uhr oder nach Vereinbarung.Price: free entry.
- 28 Museum Fuldaschifffahrt, Am Hafen 15. Der „Museumsverein Fuldaschifffahrt e.V" hat das kleine Museum im Herbst 2013 in Räumlichkeiten am alten Kasseler Hafen eröffnet. Zu sehen gibt es ein Modell des alten Kasseler Hafens, als er noch mit Güterumschlag "richtig" in Betrieb war. Ferner ist ein alter Lattenkahn zu sehen. Geschichtliche Informationstafeln und eine Multimediastation mit einer "Fuldaschifffahrt" runden die kleine Ausstellung ab.Geöffnet: jeden ersten Sa. im Monat von 13 bis 17 Uhr und jeden 3. Sonntag von 13 bis 17 Uhr. Von Dezember bis März nur nach Vereinbarung.
- 29 Straßenbahnmuseum Kassel (im KVG Depot Leipziger Straße). Das Museum der Interessengemeinschaft Nahverkehrsbetrieb Kassel e.V. hat seinen Sitz im KVG-Depot Leipziger Straße/Sandershäuser Strasse in Bettenhausen. Zu sehen gibt es eine Straßenbahnmodellanlage sowie u. a. eine kleine Sammlung von Uniformen, Fahrscheinen und "Fotoalben von damals". Die historische Fahrzeugsammlung des Vereins kann seit Herbst 2014 im Technikmuseum Kassel in Rothenditmold angeschaut werden.Geöffnet: jeden ersten Sa. im Monat von 10:30 bis 16:30 Uhr.

- 6 Museumsbahn Hessencourrier, Museumsbahnhof Kassel-Wilhelmshöhe Süd. Die von einem Verein betriebene Bahn verkehrt an einigen Wochenenden im Sommerhalbjahr von Museumsbahnhof Kassel-Wilhelmshöhe Süd bis nach Naumburg. Auf der 33,4 km langen Museumsstrecke werden Dampfzüge eingesetzt. Der Fahrplan mit Fahrpreisen ist auf der Webseite zu finden.

Weitere Bauwerke
- 30 City Hall. Die Initiative für den Bau ging auf den Industriellen Sigmund Aschrott back. Er stellte der Stadt Kassel den Baugrund kostenlos zur Verfügung. Nach 3 Jahren Bauzeit konnte die Stadthalle am 1. April 1914 eingeweiht werden. Im II. Weltkrieg wurde das Gebäude nur gering beschädigt. Wer sich speziell für Architektur interessiert, kann hier mit der Tram 4 mal kurz vorbeischauen. Das neoklassizistische Gebäude besitzt einen imposanten, nach Süden orientierten Säulengang. Heute wird die Stadthalle als Konferenzzentrum genutzt. Besichtigt werden kann das Gebäude daher nicht. Der Zugang ist nur im Rahmen von Veranstaltungen und Tagungen möglich. - 31 Gebäude des Bundessozialgerichts. Ein Ziel für Architekturfreunde. Der Bau im Stil der NS-Architektur stammt aus den 1930er Jahren. Das bis 2012 modern sanierte Gebäude wurde im Innenhof mit einem modernen, architektonisch sehenswerten Konferenzanbau versehen. Das Gebäude ist im Foyer öffentlich zugänglich. Von hier kann man auch in den Innenhof zum Elisabeth-Selbert-Saal schauen. Sonst bietet das Gericht für Gruppen auf Voranmeldung auch Führungen an. For information see Gerichtsseite.

- Unter Wandern ist ein Zusammenschluss mehrerer Initiativen und der Volkshochschule und veranstaltet in unregelmäßigen Abständen mehrstündige Erlebnistouren ins unterirdische Kassel. Es besteht die Möglichkeit, unbekannte unterirdische Bauwerke kennen- und erfahren zu lernen. Die Touren variieren, Bestandteil können alte Bunker, Felsenkeller, Weinkeller oder auch eine unterirdische stillgelegte Straßenbahnhaltestelle sein. Das Ganze wird mit Schauspielern und Zeitzeugenberichten begleitet. Eine Teilnahme kann sehr empfohlen werden, es ist jedoch recht schwer, an Karten zu kommen. Die Touren sind für Gehbehinderte nicht geeignet, Kinder unter 10 Jahren sollten nicht teilnehmen.
Kunstwerke und Denkmäler
Besonders in der Stadtmitte findet man verschiedenste Denkmäler und Skulpturen, die größtenteils frei zugänglich im öffentlichen Raum stehen. Viele davon sind Documenta-Kunstwerke, die die Stadt angekauft hat, damit sie dauerhaft in Kassel verbleiben konnten. Zum Teil wurden die Ankäufe auch mit Spendengeldern aus der Bevölkerung ermöglicht.
- 33 Spitzhacke. Das Kunstwerk liegt an der Fulda. Die 12 m hohe Skulptur liegt östlich der Orangerie. Der amerikanische Künstler Claes Oldenburg stellte das Kunstwerk 1982 anlässlich der documenta 7 auf. Er verankerte mit der Skulptur die Wilhelmshöher Allee an der Fulda und schuf damit ein neues, virtuelles Ende der Stadtachse am Flussufer. Die Straße würde in ihrer Verlängerung nämlich hier auf die Fulda treffen.

- 34 Penone-Baum. Der Bronzebaum mit dem 3 Tonnen schweren Granitfindling war das erste Kunstwerk zur dOCUMENTA (13) und wurde bereits 2010 aufgestellt. Der Baum konnte mit Hilfe von Spendengeldern angekauft werden und verbleibt damit in Kassel. Standort ist die Wiese rechts der Gustav-Mahler-Treppe nahe der Orangerie. Hintergrund zum Werk siehe Artikel im HNA-Regiowiki.
- 35 Himmelsstürmer. Die Skulptur (offizieller Name "man walking to the sky") steht auf dem Vorplatz des Hauptbahnhofs. Das Werk wurde von Jonathan Borowsky anlässlich der documenta 9 im Jahr 1992 erschaffen. Es stand zur documenta 9 auf dem Friedrichsplatz und wurde erst nachträglich nach dem Ankauf durch die Stadt Kassel (der teilweise über Spendengelder finanziert wurde) am Hauptbahnhof aufgestellt.
- 36 Vertikaler Erdkilometer. Das Kunstwerk findet sich auf dem Friedrichsplatz. Walter De Maria bohrte rund ein halbes Jahr auf dem Platz ein 1.000 m tiefes Loch. Anlass war die documenta 6 im Jahr 1977. Das Loch füllte er mit 5 cm dicken, insgesamt 1.000 m langen, massiven Messingstäben aus. Die Stirnseite des obersten Stabs kann auf dem Friedrichsplatz besichtigt werden (in der Platzmitte vor dem Fridericianum). Walter De Maria wollte mit seinem Projekt eine Verbindung zum Fridericianum als "Haus der Aufklärung" herstellen, das u. a. auch "historische Instrumente zur Vermessung der Welt barg".[2] Wie sich der vertikale Erdkilometer mit der später errichteten Tiefgarage unter dem Platz konstruktiv verhält, ist nicht bekannt.
- 37 Die Fremden. Das Werk von Thomas Schütte entstand 1992 zur documenta IX. LAge: Zu finden auf Gebäude an der Nordseite des m Friedrichsplatzes.

- 38 Rahmenbau. Das begehbare Kunstwerk (im Volksmund auch Auefenster genannt) ist am Staatstheater an der Documentahalle zu finden. Weiteres siehe Absatz Friedrichsplatz.
- 39 Linearuhr. Die Uhr ist wie eine sechsstellige Digitaluhr zu lesen (von oben nach unten). Das Ablesen funktioniert allerdings nur, wenn keine Lampen defekt sind. Lge: an der Ecke Ständeplatz /Wilhelmsstraße.
- Kunstwerk „7000 Eichen“ - Das weltweit einmalige Kunstwerk wurde von Joseph Beuys zur documenta 7 initiiert. Die Eichen stehen über das gesamte Stadtgebiet verteilt und sind mit je einer Basaltsäule gekennzeichnet. 2005 wurde das Kunstwerk unter Denkmalschutz gestellt. Im Kulturstadtplan (erhältlich in der Touristinfo) sind die Standorte der Bäume verzeichnet (Seite zum Kunstwerk).
- Laserscape Kassel - Die Laserkunst basiert auf einem Konzept des Künstlers Horst H. Baumann und wurde 1977 anlässlich der documenta 6 errichtet. Ein grüner Laser geht jeden Samstag mit Einbruch der Dunkelheit je nach Jahreszeit zwischen 17 und 22 Uhr in Betrieb. Der Laser, der bis 1 Uhr in Betrieb ist, kann bei klarem Wetter gut vom Herkules aus angeschaut werden. Montiert ist der grüne Laser ist mit zwei weiteren Lasern auf dem Zwehrener Turm am Fridericianum. Er strahlt mit einer Umlenkung am Landesmuseum den Herkules an. Er ist bei klarem Wetter weithin über der Stadt sichtbar. Ein weiterer Laser strahlt zum Mittelturm der Orangerie und wird hier optisch in 3 Teilstrahle aufgeteilt, die jeweils 10 m über Grund den Parkachsen folgen: Ein Strahl leuchtet in die Zentralachse des Parks und jeweils ein Laserteil folgt den beiden Wassergräben. - 40 Traumschiff Tante Olga. Die Polyesterskulptur, die an ein gefaltetes Papierboot erinnert, steht heute an der Heinrich Schütz Schule im Stadtteil Vorderer Westen. Das Kunstwerk von Anatol Herzfeld entstand 1977 zur documenta 6.
- 41 Ich. Wer möchte kann am Brüder-Grimm-Platz ein Podest mit der Aufschrift "Ich" erklimmen und sich von Mitreisenden ablichten lassen. Das Podest mit Treppe ist ein Werk des Künstlers Hans Traxler. Hinter dem Werk steht der Satz: "Jeder Mensch ist einzigartig." Das Werk wurde im 2007 als Außenkunstwerk zu einer Caricatura-Ausstellung aufgestellt. Lage: Das Mäuerchen steht auf der südlichen Seite des Brüder-Grimm-Platzes an der Wilhelmshöher Allee / Ecke Murhardsche Bibliothek.
Dorf in der Stadt: alte Ortskerne
Kassel besitzt verschiedene alte Ortskerne, die schon lange Teil der Großstadt geworden sind. Diese "ländliche Seite" von Kassel ist eher unbekannt. Die Dorfkerne sind zum Teil ganz gemütlich, können aber mit einer richtigen Fachwerkaltstadt natürlich bei weitem nicht mithalten. Wer richtiges Fachwerkflair genießen möchte, spart sich daher den Besuch am besten und unternimmt besser einen Tagesausflug in eine der schmucken Fachwerkstädte, die rund um Kassel zahlreich zu finden sind. Gut per Bahn erreichbar sind z. B. Hann. Münden oder auch Melsungen. Eine kleine Liste besonders attraktiver Fachwerkstädte rund um Kassel ist im Abschnitt "Ausflüge" zu finden. Die schönsten Ortskerne in Kassel:
- Niederzwehren: Der mit attraktivste Ortskern ist das 1 Märchenviertel im Stadtteil Niederzwehren. Er besitzt ein noch fast geschlossenes Ortsbild aus Fachwerkbauten. In diesem schmucken Fachwerkviertel liegt das ehemalige Wohnhaus von Dorothea Viehmann, einer bekannten Märchenzuträgerin der Brothers Grimm. Der kleine Fachwerkbau ist jedoch in Privatbesitz und nicht zugänglich. Das kleine verwinkelte Märchenviertel am Grunnelbach ist sicher ganz nett, kann aber mit den Fachwerkstädten in der Umgebung von Kassel nicht konkurrieren. Wer jedoch wenig Zeit hat und mal ein paar Fachwerkhäuser sehen möchte, ist im Märchenviertel richtig. Ein Besuch des Märchenviertels lässt sich als Tramtour auch gut mit einem Besuch des Botanischen Gartens am Park Schönfeld verbinden.
- - Anfahrt & Lage: per Tram ab Stadtmitte: Linie 5 Richtung Baunatal bzw. Linie 6 Richtung Schulzentrum Brückenhof bis zu Haltestelle "Dennhäuser Straße".
- Wahlershausen: Wahlershausen ist die "historische Keimzelle" des heutigen Stadtteils Wilhelmshöhe. Nur wenige Meter vom Fernbahnhof entfernt, verlässt man das großstädtische Subzentrum und taucht entlang der Langen Straße in die dörfliche Kulisse zu Füßen des Rammelsberges ein.
- - Anfahrt per Tram ab Stadtmitte: Linie 1,3 und 4 bis zum Bahnhof Wilhelmshöhe bzw. Tram 1 bis Kunoldstraße
- Kirchditmold: Der alte Dorfkern liegt auf einem kleinen Muschelkalkrücken etwa 1,5 km nördlich des Fernbahnhofs. Hier findet sich in der Brunnenstraße der wahrscheinlich stattlichste noch erhaltene Fachwerkbau von Kassel - das alte Pfarrhaus (privates Wohngebäude; kein Zugang). Von der Mergellstraße aus hat man von unten aber einen guten Blick auf das Gebäude. Aber auch hier gilt: Solche Häuser hat Hann. Münden natürlich gleich "Dutzendweise" zu bieten. Wer Abends z. B. aber mal ein gemütliches Spazierziel abseits der ausgetretenen Touristenpfade sucht, kann Alt-Kirchditmold durchaus mal erkunden. Es bietet sich an, den Spaziergang am besten als Runde über den Rammelsberg und Wahlershausen zu absolvieren. Dann erhält man das dörfliche Kassel gleich im "Doppelpack".

Park Schönfeld
Der Park Schönfeld liegt zwischen den Stadtteilen Wehlheiden und Niederzwehren im Süden von Kassel. Ein Bachlauf in einem kleinen Tal, der zu mehreren Teichen angestaut ist, bestimmt das Landschaftsbild des langgestreckten Parks. Die Anlage besitzt teilweise einen alten Baumbestand, der besonders im Sommer zu schattigen Spaziergängen einlädt.Namensgeber für den Park ist das Schlösschen Schönfeld, das oben am Hang neben dem Botanischen Garten liegt. "Hörenswert" ist der Klangpfad (www.klangpfad-kassel.de). Am Park liegt ferner der Botanische Garten (siehe unten).
- Anfahrt Öffentlicher Verkehr ab Stadtmitte: Tramlinie 5 Richtung Baunatal bis zur 7 Haltestelle Park Schönfeld.
Botanical Garden
Anyone who has already seen everything "big" in Kassel can take a look at the Botanical Garden. Green areas in the front west
If you are looking for opportunities for walks and relaxation near the Wilhelmshöhe long-distance train station, the parks in the "Vorderer Westen" district are the right choice. The green spaces are not particularly large or spectacular, but are only a few minutes' walk from the long-distance train station and the congress center in the town hall:

Viewpoints
Kassel is a city on or in the low mountain range. The green one Habichtswald with its eastern foothills extends far into the urban area. The city axis of Wilhelmshöher Allee naturally represents a special connection between city and mountains. "Star" among the numerous Kassel views is the well-known city axis view from Hercules. - Nordic skiing - In the Habichtswald, different trails are groomed between 480 and 580 m altitude (3 circular trails with a total of around 15-18 km). - Sledding - In the lower area of the ski lift on the tall grass there is also a 200 m long toboggan slope. A more easily accessible toboggan run can be found on Essigberg (large parking lot; beautiful valley view to the west). Close to the city you can go tobogganing at the Hessenschanze (final stop of Tram 8 in Kirchditmold).

The pedestrian zone of the Upper and Lower Koenigstrasse is the central shopping street of Kassel.
- 1 Citypoint shopping center. The modern shopping center on Königsplatz is great for strolling and shopping. In the basement there is a. a supermarket (tegut, open Mon-Sat 7:30 a.m.-10 p.m.).
- 2 Royal Gallery. The gallery on Königstrasse has a high interior hall. In this hall there is a lot of gastronomy that invites you to stop. There is a supermarket in the basement (LIDL, open Mon-Sat 8 am-9pm).
- 3 Elector Gallery. .The two-story shopping gallery offers some dining options. At the end of the lower level there is a discounter (Aldi, open Mon-Sat 8 am-8pm). The gallery is located above the Königsplatz.
- 4 Market hall, Wildemannsgasse 1. The historic market hall in Kassel extends over two floors. There are various stalls selling fruit and vegetables, but also meat, fish, baked goods and flowers. There are also a few options for stopping off in the market hall.Open: Thursday and Friday from 7 am to 6 pm and Saturday from 7 am to 2 pm.

- 5 dec. The D.German E.buyingzentrum is located in the Niederzwehren district in the south of Kassel and offers a wide range of options. The shopping center can be easily reached from the city center (Königsstraße) by tram lines 5 6 (get off at Leuschnerstraße stop, from here it is approx. 300 m walk), bus line 24 goes directly to the shopping center.

At Kasseler Ribs, chops are cured and lightly smoked pieces of pork. The name has nothing to do with the city of Kassel, as one might think. There are various theories about where the name came from. The pork ribs get their name from the Hebrew (cashier or Yiddish chaser means pig. Another theory is that Kasseler comes from Kasserolle and may have been introduced with the Huguenots. According to a third theory, the term comes from a Berlin butcher named Cassel.
Kassel's "nightlife district" can be found around Friedrich-Ebert-Straße in the West district. A large number of popular scene get-togethers and restaurants can be found here.

- 1 Lohmann Kassel, Königstor 8. allegedly Kassel's oldest pub with beer garden, which is popular with visitors. There is an extensive menu (can be found on the net). In the summer half of the year, the Beer garden des Lohmann gladly used.
- 2 Ulenspiegel, Goethestrasse 30. The rustic pub with a cozy beer garden in the Vorderen West is a cross-generational institution. There is only a small menu here.
- 3 Beer garden on the roundabout. You sit nicely under trees with a panoramic view of the Fulda. In addition to "liquid food", there are also hand-held foods such as bratwurst with grilled rolls. Incidentally, the roundabout is a turret built in 1523 of the fortress of the former Landgrave Castle. The City Palace Hasn't stood since a major fire in 1811. Usable stones from the fire ruin were used in the construction of the New Gallery from 1871 to 1874. Today the regional council is located at the site. The beer garden is open in the summer months.

Wirtschaftlich sind Stadt und Umland Kassel das Zugpferd der Region Nordhessen. Einige namhafte Unternehmen haben ihren Sitz in der Stadt (u. a. Kali und Salz, Wingas bzw. Wintershall). Zwei weitere wichtige wirtschaftliche Standbeine der Region sind im Ballungsraum Kassel ansässig. Dies sind das Volkswagenwerk in Baunatal und die SMA AG in Niestetal. Besonders die SMA AG hat stark expandiert und in den letzten Jahren mehrere Tausend Stellen geschaffen.
Des Weiteren ist Kassel Verwaltungs- und Behördenstadt. Viele Verbände und Institutionen unterhalten in der Stadt Verwaltungssitze. Ein zunehmend wichtiger werdender Arbeitgeber ist auch die 1970 als Gesamthochschule gegründete Universität, die noch weiter ausgebaut werden soll.

Kassel ist nicht kriminalitätsfrei, größere Auffälligkeiten deutschlandweit im Vergleich zu Städten ähnlicher Größe bestehen aber nicht. Natürlich sollte man die bekannten Regeln wie überall beachten: keine Wertsachen im Auto lassen, Fahrrad immer anschließen; Taschen bzw. Wertsachen diebstahlsicher fest am Körper tragen; in der Dunkelheit erhöht aufmerksam sein und dunkle, unbekannte Ecken besonders alleine möglichst meiden; in dunkeln, einsamen Gegenden bzw. Problemzonen unbekannten Leuten bzw. Menschengruppen aus dem Weg gehen.
Als "soziale Brennpunkte" gelten in Kassel u. a. der Bereich am Stern, die Siedlungen Mattenberg / Brückenhof im Stadtteil Oberzwehren, die Großsiedlung in Waldau und auch etwas die Bereiche Rothenditmold, Nordstadt, und Wesertor. Dies sind in der Regel Bereiche, die für den Kasselbesucher nicht relevant sind und abseits der Sehenswürdigkeiten liegen. Um diese Stadtteile kann man als Besucher problemlos einen Bogen machen.
Im Vergleich zu bekannten sozialen Brennpunkten in anderen Großstädten wie Berlin usw. handelt es sich hier in Kassel aber um recht kleine Gebiete mit vergleichsweise kleineren Problemen. Zum Teil gibt es in den genannten Bereichen auch positive Entwicklungen.
Die einzige Ausnahme als Problembereich mit evtl. Teilrelevanz für Besucher stellt in Mitte der Bereich Stern zwischen Kurt-Schumacher-Straße und Holländischer Platz da. Zu belebten Tageszeiten kann man aber weitgehend problemlos z. B. vom Königsplatz zur Uni am Hopla laufen.

- Stadtspaziergänge mit den Kassel Greeter: Unter dem Motto “Mit Freunden Kassel entdecken“ bieten die Kassler Greeter kostenlose Stadtrundgänge an. Dabei lernen Gäste Kassel abseits der üblichen Pfade aus Sicht von Einheimischen kennen. Mittlerweile 40 Greeter, so heißen die ehrenamtlich Engagierten bei den Kassel Greetern, freuen sich, Besuchern ihre Stadt mit all ihren Ecken und Kanten authentisch zu zeigen. So werden Sie Lieblingsorte und versteckte Pfade und Winkel, die man bei üblichen Stadtrundgängen nicht besucht, hautnah erleben. Aber auch persönliche Geschichten und Erlebnisse oder Ausgeh- und Freizeit-Tipps erfahren Sie dabei. Wenn irgend möglich werden Themenwünsche berücksichtigt, die somit diese Spaziergänge zu einer persönlichen und individuellen Begegnung mit der Stadt werden lassen. Um die Individualität zu wahren, werden die Greets nur in Kleingruppen bis max. 6 Personen durchgeführt. - Stadtführungen per "Selbstbalance-Roller": Für das Fahren des vor allem aus den USA bekannten, einachsigen Elektrorollers benötigt man mindestens einen Mofa- oder auch PKW-Führerschein. Die Teilnahme an den 2-stündigen Touren kostet etwa 50 € pro Person. Lesenswert als Hintergrund ist der Wikipediaartikel zum Fahrzeug. Detaillierte Tourenhinweise und Buchung siehe Seiten der Veranstalter. In Kassel gibt es für Stadtführungen zwei Anbieter: Firma "time to team" aus Springe (Infos dazu über Kassel Marketing erhältlich) und die Firma "funmobi" aus Melsungen (Infos auf der Firmenseite). Funmobi bietet übrigens auch eine Nachttour durch Kassel an.
- Stadtrundfahrten mit dem Bus:Seid 2010 gibt es in Kassel die Stadtrundfahrten mit den Eventbussen. In der Hauptsaison von April bis Oktober kann man von Mittwoch bis Sonntag im Hop On Hop Off Service an den Stadtrundfahrten teilnehmen und so einen ersten Eindruck von Kassel gewinnen. Es sind 11 Sprachen im Bus zu hören, so dass auch ausländische Gästen die Möglichkeit haben bei einer individuellen Tour Kassel kennenzulernen. Bad Wilhelmshöhe spa district
1978 konnte man in Wilhelmshöhe per Bohrung eine Thermalwasserquelle erschließen. Heute steht hier die Kurhessentherme. Zum kleinen Kurbereich zählt u. a. die Habichtswaldklinik. Heute darf Bad Wilhelmshöhe die Titel "Kneipp-" und "Thermalsole-Heilbad" tragen. Mit rund 1000 Kurgästen spielt das Bad aber im Tourismus der Stadt eine sehr untergeordnete Rolle.[3]
Die Kurbeitrag im Kurbezirk Bad Wilhelmshöhe beträgt pro Aufenthaltstag und Person 0,50 €. Wer außerhalb des Kurbezirks nächtigt, der etwa oberhalb des Fernbahnhofs in Wilhelmshöhe beginnt, zahlt nichts. Eine "Bettensteuer" besitzt Kassel nicht.

- Ein zentraler Anlaufpunkt in der Stadtmitte sind diesbezüglich die frei zugänglichen, öffentlichen Toiletten im Rathaus - Zugang: geöffnet zu den gängigen Tageszeiten. Steht man vor dem Haupteingang des Rathauses in der Königsstraße, so finden sich die Toiletten im rechten Seitenflügel.

- Schloss und Park Wilhelmsthal - Kleinod des Rokoko, etwa 15 km nordwestlich bei Calden.
- vielfältige Ausflugsziele und Wandermöglichkeiten im stadtnahen Habichtswald bzw. im Naturpark Habichtswald
- Hessencourrier - Die Museumseisenbahn fährt mit Dampfzügen an mindestens einem Wochenende im Monat vom eigenen Bahnhof "Kassel-Wilhelmshöhe Süd" eine gut 33 km lange, landschaftlich schöne Strecke durchs bergige Umland in das Fachwerkstädtchen Naumburg.
Weiter entfernt:
- To the Edersee (etwa 40 km südwestlich) mit der Sperrmauer, Schloss Waldeck, dem Wildtierpark und schönen Wandermöglichkeiten an den Seehängen und im Kellerwald-Edersee National Park.
- In the Reinhardswald mit Urwald Sababurg, Schloss und Tierpark Sababurg (etwa 30 km nördlich).
- In the Hohen Meißner - der Sage nach die Heimat von Frau Holle (etwa 40 km östlich). Einen Ausflug zum Meißner lässt sich gut mit einem Besuch des hessischen Werratals verbinden. Sehenswert sind hier die Fachwerkperlen Bad Sooden-Allendorf, Eschwege und auch Witzenhausen. Ein Besuch von Witzenhausen lohnt vor allem zur Kirschblüte im Frühjahr.
- to Goettingen (etwa 40 km nordöstlich; 20 Minuten im ICE, 1 Std. im Nahverkehr mit dem Cantus ab Hauptbahnhof Kassel)
- to Fulda und evtl. in die Rhön zur Wasserkuppe (etwa 80 km südlich; 30 Minuten im ICE bzw. 1 172 Std. im Nahverkehr nach Fulda) mit Dom, barocker Altstadt und dem Stadtschloss.
Attraktive, mittelalterlich anmutende Fachwerkstädte um Kassel are:
- Bad Sooden-Allendorf - Fachwerkperle im hessischen Werratal. Mit dem Auto ist Bad-Soden-Allendorf über Helsa and Großalmerode auf z. T. landschaftlich attraktiven Straßen erreichbar (rund 40 bis 45 km einfach). Wer Lust hat, kann auch die A 7 über Witzenhausen nehmen und noch die sehr sehenswerte Burg Hanstein (evtl. mit Spaziergang zur Teufelskanzel) mit in den Tagesausflug einbauen.
- Eschwege (rund 50 km östlich von Kassel), schmucke Fachwerkaltstadt, Werratalsee mit Bade- und Wassersportmöglichkeiten. Ein Besuch von Eschwege lässt sich als Rundtour per Auto gut mit einem Besuch des hohen Meißner connect. Mit der Bahn ist Eschwege nur sehr umständlich über Eichenberg und Bebra erreichbar (Fahrzeit etwa 1 1/2 einfach)
- Fritzlar - sehr attraktive Fachwerkstadt mit schmuckem Marktplatz, Dom und zu großen Teilen erhaltener Stadtmauer. Ein Besuch von Fritzlar lässt sich per KFZ gut mit einem Ausflug zum Edersee connect. Mit dem Bus ist Fritzlar über die Linie 500 in etwa 45 Minuten erreichbar.
- Hann. Münden - Landschaftlich sehr schön an den Flüssen Fulda, Werra und Weser gelegene "Fachwerkmetropole". Wer viel Fachwerk sucht, ist hier richtig. Per Bahn ist Hann. Münden in 20 bis 30 Minuten erreichbar. Die vielbesuchte Stadt ist ab Kassel auch ein schönes Radtourenziel.
- Hofgeismar (30 km nördlich) - nette Altstadt mit Fachwerkbauten. Ein Besuch von Hofgeismar per KFZ lässt sich gut mit einer Tour in den Reinhardswald mit Urwald Sababurg, Tierpark Sababurg und dem "Dornröschenschloss" Sababurg verbinden. Hofgeismar ist auch gut per Bahn erreichbar (Regiotramlinie 3 Richtung Hümme, oder Regionalexpress Richtung Hagen ab Fernbahnhof Wilhelmshöhe)
- Kaufungen - 10 km östlich von Kassel gelegene Wohnstadt mit Fachwerkaltstadt. Wer bei einem kleinen Nachmittagspaziergang mal Fachwerk sehen möchte, kann gut Kaufungen besuchen (mit der Tramlinie 4 erreichbar).
- Melsungen - bekannte Fachwerkstadt an der Fulda etwa 30 km südlich von Fulda. Wahrzeichen der Stadt ist das stattliche Fachwerk-Rathaus am Markt. Anfahrt: ab Kassel-Wilhelmshöhe in nur 17 Minuten mit dem Zug (Cantus Richtung Fulda) oder 29 Minuten mit der Regiotramlinie 5. Mit dem KFZ ist Melsungen ebenfalls schnell über die A 7 erreichbar. Wer mit dem KFZ anreist, kann auf der Fahrt noch gut einen kleinen Abstecher zur Burgruine Heiligenstein nahe der A 7 machen (u. a. schöner Panoramarundblick).
- Rotenburg on the Fulda - kleine Fachwerkperle an der Fulda etwa 40 km südlich von Kassel (ebenfalls an der Bahnstrecke Kassel-Fulda gelegen)
Hiking tips
Die waldreiche Mittelgebirgslandschaft rund um Kassel lädt zu Wanderungen ein. Für Wanderungen im stadtnahen Bereich des Habichtswaldes bietet sich die Nutzung der unter literature angegebenen amtlichen Wanderkarte an.
Im Stadtgebiet und im Nahbereich von Kassel:
- Wanderrouten im Habichtswald (Gebirge): Rund- und Streckenwanderwege im Habichtswald (mountains)
- Wanderung von der Hessenschanze to the Erlenloch: Eine schöne "innerstädtische" Wanderung führt von der Endhaltestelle Hessenschanze der Straßenbahnlinie 8 zunächst der Markierung F (Fulda-Diemel-Weg), später dann dem Δ folgend über 3,5 km teilweise durch naturbelassene Wälder zum Erlenloch, einem kleinen, malerischen See mit der beliebten Ausflugsgaststätte Gasthaus zum Erlenloch in unmittelbarer Nähe. Von dort ist es dann noch ein halber Kilometer bis zur Bushaltestelle Erlenloch der Linie 110, die wieder ins Stadtgebiet zurückführt (Unbedingt vorher über Abfahrtszeiten erkundigen).
- Kleiner Spaziergang zum Bismarck Tower bei Brasselsberg (schöne Sicht auf das Kasseler Becken). Der Turm ist nach längerer Innensanierung seit Mitte Oktober 2010 wieder zugänglich. Weitere Infos zum Turm (Anfahrt) sind im Artikel Habichtswald to find.
- Druselpfad - Der neue 13 km lange Wanderweg des Hessisch-Waldeckischer Gebirgsverein Kassel e.V. entlang der w:Drusel wurde am 21. Juni 2013 eröffnet. Die Strecke beginnt am Golfplatz im Habichtswald und führt entlang der Fulda bis zur Mündung des kleinen Gewässers in die Fulda. Die Route ist allerdings als Gesamtes gesehen eher ein Wanderweg als ein schmaler, naturnaher "Wanderpfad". Attraktiv ist natürlich vor allem der Streckenverlauf im Habichtswald. Zwischen Neu-Holland und dem Bergsee Asch läuft man sogar auf einem netten "Waalweg" entlang eines Wasserzuführungskanals der Wasserspiele. Im Abstieg vom schönen Bergsee Asch folgt dann ein einfacher "Bergwanderweg", der etwas steinig ist. Aber auch im Stadtbereich von Kassel finden sich schöne Abschnitte an der Drusel, die sich hier als ein munterer Bach vorstellt. So läuft man z. B. auf dem Abschnitt von Bad Wilhelmshöhe über Wahlerhausen bis zum Aschrottpark durchaus durch viel "grün" abseits des Verkehrs. Vom Ende der Goetheanlage bis zur Frankfurter Straße am Weinberg ist man aber im urbanen Stadtgebiet auf Bürgersteigen unterwegs (davon 700 m entlang der etwas stärker befahrenen Tischbeinstr). hier ist die Drusel weitgehend eingerohrt. Mit einem Wanderpfad hat die Route hier sicher nichts mehr zu tun. Unterhalb der Frankfurter Straße geht es dann aber wieder auf schönen Spazierwegen bis zur Orangerie. Ab hier spaziert man die letzten Meter wieder am KFZ-Verkehr entlang des Auedamms bis zur Mündung der Drusel in die Fulda (die hier dann "Kleine Fulda" heißt). - Kassel-Steig - Der 157 km lange Panorama-Rundweg um das Kasseler Becken wurde von ehrenamtlich Aktiven des Hessisch-Waldeckischen Gebirgsverein Kassel e.V. anlässlich des Stadtjubiläums 2013 initiiert. Die Route verbindet diverse Stadtblicke am Rand des Kasseler Beckens. Die Bezeichnung "Steig" ist nicht ganz passend, denn auf großen Teilen werden mehr Fahrwege statt attraktiver Wanderpfade genutzt. So erfolgt der Aufstieg zum Herkules vom Druseltal kommend nicht über den attraktiven Bergpfad am Hüttenberg, sondern über den alten Kutschweg parallel der Kaskaden. Hier einfach die Treppen zum Herkules nutzen, die 2 km Fahrweg braucht man als Fußgänger nicht gesehen zu haben. Die 12 Etappen des Kassel-Steigs sind als Tagestouren so konzipiert, dass die Ein- und Ausstiegspunkte alle mit dem öffentlichen Verkehr erreichbar sind. Für einen mehrtägigen Wanderurlaub besitzt die urbane Strecke natürlich nicht das richtige Umfeld. www.kassel-steig.de
- Terrainkurwege Wilhelmshöhe - Die sieben Wander- und Spazierwege mit einer Gesamtlänge von 48 Kilometern und einer durchschnittlichen Länge von 6,9 Kilometern wurden 2014 nach wissenschaftlichen Kriterien neu angelegt und erschließen auf befestigten und leicht begehbaren Park-, Forst- und Wirtschaftswegen den Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe and the Hohen Habichtswald. Sie verbinden größere und kleinere Sehenswürdigkeiten, Aussichtspunkte, Ausflugsrestaurants und Kneipp-Anlagen miteinander; fünf der sieben Terrainkurwege sind dabei als Rundwege ausgelegt.
- Wanderung auf das Hohe Gras - Mit 615 m ist die Erhebung gleichzeitig der höchste Berg von Kassel und vom Habichtswald. Am Turm gibt es eine gemütliche Ausflugsgaststätte (geöffnet Di - So von 11 - 18 Uhr). Der Schlüssel zum Aussichtsturm ist in der Gaststätte auf Nachfrage erhältlich. Besonders an heißen, schwülen Sommertagen lohnt ein Besuch des Hohen Grases, da es dann hier oben ein paar Grad kühler ist als im Kasseler Becken. Vorschlag für Streckenwanderung (mit Wanderplan) über Hirzstein und Bismarckturm zurück nach Kassel siehe Artikel "Habichtswald".
- Wanderungen auf den Hohen Dörnberg. Das abwechslungsreiche Bergmassiv mit schönen Aussichtspunkten, Basaltklippen und Wacholderheide liegt etwa 10 km nordwestlich der Stadt. Anfahrt Öffentlicher Verkehr: Mit der Regiotramlinie 4 bis zum Haltepunkt Fürstenwald fahren. Von hier sind es zu Fuß etwa 3 km bis zum Naturparkzentrum unterhalb der Helfensteine.
- Aussichtsreiche Tagestour ab Herkules zum Hohen Dörnberg: Landschaftlich schön ist besonders der Übergang vom Herkules auf dem Habichtswaldsteig hinüber in das Dörnbergmassiv. Strecke: Auffahrt mit Tram und Bus zum Herkules. Wanderung über Silbersee zum hohen Dörnberg (Aussicht) - Helfensteine (Aussicht) - Naturparkzentrum Dörnberg - Alpenpfad an der Wacholderheide - Schreckensbergturm (schöner Panoramablick als Tourenabschluss). Abstieg von hier zum Bahnhof Zierenberg. Ab hier Rückfahrt per Bahn nach Kassel (Regiotram 4 zum Hauptbahnhof oder Regionalbahn zum Fernbahnhof Wilhelmshöhe), Etwa 17 - 18 km lange, bergige Strecke mit einem recht hohen Anteil an kleinen, attraktiven Wanderpfaden. - Wanderung abseits der Touristenpfade ab Bahnhof Eichenberg zur Burg Hanstein und zur Teufelskanzel hoch über der Werra.
- Rundwanderung "Peterskopf und Edersee" im Kellerwald-Edersee National Park.

Bike tours
Rund um Kassel gibt es einige attraktive Möglichkeiten, um Tagesradtouren zu unternehmen. Die Fahrradmitnahme im Nahverkehr des NVV ist möglich (sofern natürlich Platz im Radabteil). Die Radmitnahme ist im NVV-Gebiet sogar kostenfrei. Radwanderkarte nordhessenweit siehe Abschnitt literature.
Route tours
- On the Fulda cycle path to Hann. Münden - Klassiker als Tagesradtour ab Kassel; etwa 30 km einfach, ebene Strecke am Fluss entlang; eine Strecke per Bahn ist möglich.
- Ab Bahnhof Wabern Radtour zum Edersee - 60 km ebene Tour hin und zurück. Weiteres siehe auch Artikel Edersee Abschnitt Anreise mit dem Fahrrad
- Ab Kassel über Fulda-, Eder- und den netten Kleinbahnradweg to Gudensberg - Etwa 25 bis 30 km einfach. Ab Bahnhof Grifte sind es nur knapp 10 km. Gudensberg ist ein nettes Fachwerkstädtchen mit Burgruine (schöner Talblick).
- Auf der ehemaligen Bahntrasse der Söhrebahn to Söhrewald-Wellerode und weiter durch die Söhre zum Stellbergsee - Etwa 15 km einfach. Bis Wellerode Wald beträgt die Streckenlänge nur 10 km.
- Ab Bahnhof Hofgeismar bzw. Hümme eben entlang des Diemelradwegs to Bad Karlshafen (40 km Tour hin und zurück)
- Auf dem Fulda-Radweg in die Fachwerkstadt Melsungen - rund 40 km einfach. Es bietet sich an, eine Strecke mit der Bahn zu fahren
- Ab Bahnhof Wabern über den Eder- und Fulda-Radweg zurück nach Kassel - etwa 40 bis 45 km einfach.
- Rad- und Bahnrunde Ederseebahn-Radweg mit der Strecke Korbach - Edersee - Wabern (55 km weitgehend bergab; davon 26 km auf einem attraktivem Bahnradweg; ein Abstecher an den Edersee ist möglich). Infos siehe Artikel Ederseebahn-Radweg
