Edersee - Edersee

The diverse holiday region Edersee in North Hesse invites you to visit. There is a lot to discover around the beautifully landscaped reservoir. In addition to various sights that can be visited, active holidaymakers in particular get their money's worth on the Edersee - whether water sports enthusiasts, hikers or touring cyclists. In addition to German holidaymakers, Dutch guests in particular like to visit the region.

The is directly south of the dam Kellerwald-Edersee National Park.

Other goals

background

The dam wall after it was destroyed in 1943 (most likely taken from the clock head)

The barrier wall of the Edersee was built between 1908 and 1914. During the flooding, the villages of Asel, Berich and Bringhausen disappeared. They were rebuilt in higher places. When the water is low - in late summer in hot years - you can see and walk across the old bridge from Asel over the Eder.

On the night of May 17, 1943, a British rotation bomb destroyed the barrier wall and triggered a 6 - 8 m high tidal wave through the lower Eder and Fulda valleys. Hundreds of houses as well as factories, railroad lines, roads, bridges and trees were destroyed or washed away. There are different figures about the number of fatalities, they vary between 47 and 800 people.

In 2014, the region celebrated this with an extensive range of events Anniversary "100 years Edersee". Extensive information on the history of the Edersee can also be found on the anniversary page (including historical photos of the old Edertal and the construction of the barrier wall).

To the water level of the Edersee

Edertal or "See" in September 2011 near Herzhausen (view down the Eder)

The lake is fully blocked from April / May to around June / July. Towards late summer, the water is increasingly drained (to maintain shipping on the Weser). With the construction of the Edertalsperre in 1905, corresponding management guidelines were passed, which are still valid today. In addition to flood protection, securing the then much more extensive shipping on the Oberweser was another building site for the Edertalsperre. However, back then, of course, the lake did not have the same tourist significance as it does today. Therefore, this water management in the region is of course very controversial today. Many are demanding a new water management plan for the Edersee from the federal government that owns the dam.

However, there should still be enough water in the lake for summer bathing fun until around the end of August. Unfortunately, this does not always apply. In the summer of 2011, for example, the level of the lake had already dropped to only 41.66 million m³ at the beginning of August or was drained (21 m under full damming). The reasons were level increases on shipping on the Weser and low rainfall in June and July 2011.[1] So if you want to do water sports on the lake in late summer, you should find out more before starting your trip so that you are not left dry (e.g. ask whether you can still put your boat in the water at the targeted campsite). However, since 2008 there has been an agreement that from 40 million m³ only as much water is drained as flows into it. However, the lake has then already fallen dry to a good 2/3 of its length. But at least it appears as a small consolation "Edersee-Atlantis" gradually comes up again. Of course, this cannot replace a fuller lake for many holidaymakers. Due to the massive protests against the empty reservoir in the high season in summer 2011, one now has one Compromise agreed: From 140 million m³, water should now be saved and, due to the lower water drainage from the lake, the minimum level of the Weser should drop in the event of drought.

By bicycle

The structural highlight of the Ederseebahn cycle path: the Reiherbachtal bridge near Selbach.
  • Eder cycle path - With the combination of bike and train, even less sporty people can visit the Edersee from Kassel on a day bike tour: To do this, take the regional express from Kassel in the direction of Frankfurt to Wabern (travel time from Wilhelmshöhe long-distance station is only 19 minutes every 2 hours). In addition to the regional express to Wabern, you can also use the Regiotram (runs every hour, travel time: 34 minutes). From Wabern you cycle along the Eder on mostly scenic and flat paths for about 30 km to the barrier wall. On the way you can take a detour into the historical Fritzlar do, but the old town is a bit on the mountain. Another option is to go by bike from Wega train station (15 km).
  • Ederseebahn cycle path - The Ederseebahn cycle path leads from Korbach to the Edersee holiday region. The railway cycle path connects Korbach and the former Buhlen train station. The route - 26 km long, paved bike route with two shorter tunnels and several viaducts - limits the Edersee holiday region to the north and invites you to enjoy attractive day tours by bike. The largest bridge is the Selbach Viaduct, 150 m long and 28 m high.

mobility

The best way to spend a holiday on the Edersee is a car.

For those who enjoy being physically active, bicycles may at least partially compensate for the moderate public transport offer.

Waldecker Bergbahn

The Waldecker Bergbahn
Mountain station of the cable car

The small two-person cabin lift leads from the 14 Close to the valley at 368 m 1 Waldeck Castle up. The 650 m long track overcomes 120 meters in altitude in around 3 minutes. A ride on the cable car is an interesting experience, especially for families. Incidentally, the system was built in 1961 by Pohlig AG from Cologne. The engineer and entrepreneur Julius Pohlig (1842 - 1916) is regarded as the "pioneer of cable car construction". In 2011 the historic, but well-maintained facility celebrated its 50th anniversary. The railway is still a "manual monocable gondola" without automated acceleration and coupling onto the rope, as it has long been state of the art today. That is why there is still personal service at the gondolas, which is very rare today on small cabin cable cars. The cabin doors of the lift, which was built in 1961, also have to be opened and closed manually by the staff. The journey takes place in cute, colorful "cuddly gondolas", where you sit on upholstered seats across from each other. The doors are open in the window area so that everything is always well ventilated.

  • Driving times: In the summer half of the year, the lift is in operation daily from the end of March / April until October. For exact season dates and travel times, see Side of the cable car
  • Fares: one way: adults: € 4.00, children (5 to 14 years): € 2.50; Ascent and descent: adults: € 6, children: € 3.20; Bicycle transport is also possible for € 1.50 in a special cargo gondola (e-bike € 2). Dog € 1 per trip (price 03-2021).
  • Location: The valley station of the railway is a little above the lake promenade from Waldeck-West on the country road up to Waldeck 51 ° 12 '17 "N.9 ° 3 ′ 1 ″ E. Cable car customers can park for free at the cable car (parking fees at the top of the castle). From the "Waldeck-West" jetty you walk about a kilometer through the attractively designed lake promenade. Tip for families: One comes among other things. past a playground with a climbing frame.
  • Further technical data: Conveying capacity of 720 people per hour with 28 2-person gondolas. The 24 mm thick pulling and carrying rope runs over 6 supports.

By bicycle

  • Edersee cycle path - If you want, you can also cycle around the dam. The Edersee cycle path leads 55 km around the lake.

Public transport / by bus

Topic: Holidays without a car on the Edersee?

As of June 2019, the Edersee holiday region is not geared towards a multi-day holiday without your own car or is ideally suited for it.

With the reopening of the Korbach - Frankenberg route, the public transport situation, especially in the western area of the Edersess, has improved a lot, but that is not enough for a really attractive and relaxed, car-free holiday. Otherwise there is a "seasonal traffic" by bus, but the intervals are thin. In the summer of 2019, for example, the 503 bus route in the north of the lake, which is actually important for tourism, only runs every two hours with six trips in each direction (see also Timetable line 15 in the summer half of 2019). Despite this rather moderate public transport offer, the region and the Kellerwald-Edersee National Park appeared in the 06-2019 Campaign "Destination Nature". Criteria that travelers can understand as to when a holiday region is exactly qualified for the campaign in terms of public transport cannot be found on the page.

Who, despite the restrictions, would like to spend a multi-day vacation without a car here:

  • Some accommodations offer the "MeineCard guest card", which includes free use of regional public transport.
  • Otherwise without a bike, it is very helpful to find accommodation in Hemfurth as close as possible to the barrier wall. So you have the most important means of transport (ship and existing bus) within walking distance of the accommodation. Who z. B. want to rent a holiday apartment, as of 06-2019 in Hemfurth there is also a smaller grocery store (Edeka) for shopping.
  • Another interesting option for a holiday without a car on the Edersee is a multi-day hike on the Edersee Urwaldsteig around the lake. The Herzhausen train station is the ideal starting point for public transport.
  • If you are sporty: Due to the restrictions in public transport, you may fall back on the combination of "bike & train". A pedelec is ideal as your own bike on site.

However, it is about 50 meters in altitude, partly steeply downhill, which you have to climb again later.

Kahle Haardt with a beautiful view and a gnarly forest

Edersee impressions on the Kahlen Haardt
Already from the steep slope you have beautiful views of the Edersee.

The Kahle Haardt is located on the Scheid peninsula. One of the most beautiful views of the Edersee can be found on its ridge - the 5 Beautiful view. The name says it all. Located above the steep slope, you have a wonderful natural view of the reservoir and the opposite cellar forest. A visit to the Schöne Aussicht is worthwhile in all seasons. Wooden benches invite you to rest at the lookout point (unfortunately without a backrest).

The Kahle Haardt is also known for its ancient one Gnarled forest. Due to the extreme site conditions on the steep, stony and dry southern slope of the Kahler Haardt, the oaks developed small, sometimes gnarled forms due to their slow growth. Some of the trees are several hundred years old. In the inaccessible steep slopes, the dry oak forest has in some cases never been touched, so that you can still marvel at real primeval forest here. On the 6 Steep slope path, which runs from the tip of the Scheid peninsula directly through the rocky steep slope, you can safely walk on cloth filling with these ancient tree veterans. However, one should not hike up the Kahle Haardt with the idea of finding a huge forest full of rustic gnarled trees there. But especially on the Steilhangweg you can definitely find one or the other beautiful specimen of this fabulous genus.

  • Directions by car: The best way to get to the beautiful view is by car via Basdorf. Here you will find a parking lot outside the village at the edge of the forest (located at the sports field at16 ; Note: The parking lot is marked in Openstreetmap as "Festplatz Basdorf"). You walk from the parking lot almost flat just under 1.5 km to the viewpoint. The first 3/4 of the route is a bit monotonous on a paved road in the forest. The last quarter is a near-natural driving / hiking path with earth covering. The route is suitable for pushchairs, provided that it is somewhat cross-country. There are only a few tree roots to overcome just before the lookout point.
  • Arriving by bike: The Edersee cycle path leads from Niederwerbe over gravel roads in the forest to the back of the Kahlen Haardt. At the top of the paved road, do not follow the route to the right, but turn left. After a few hundred meters, a near-natural earth-covered road goes diagonally to the left, which leads to the area of the viewpoint (watch out for pedestrians).
  • Arrival by ship: A particularly attractive excursion option is to combine a hike over the Kahle Haardt with a boat trip on the Edersee. From the jetties 17 Barrage West or 18 Barrage wall east or from 19 Waldeck-West can be reached with the Ederseepersonenschifffahrt on the 20 Get to the Scheid peninsula. For the circular hike over the steep slope path up to the beautiful view and the return over the ridge you should plan about 1 ½ to 2 hours (about 5 km round with 150 meters of altitude). In the pre- and post-season, the ships run exactly every 2 hours. In the high season in summer there is sometimes even a Offered every hour.
The Scheid peninsula can also be reached from Rehbach with the 21 Passenger ferry. Bicycles are also transported (Ferry times and further information).

Edersee treetop path

On the Baumkronenweg Edersee

7 The treetop path (official name "TreeTopWalk"), which opened at the end of July 2010, is located west of the wildlife park high above the Edersee. Here the 230 m long path meanders through the crowns of the beech forest. The highlight of the path is the Panorama platform with a view of the lake, which is 30 m above the forest floor (or about 50 - 60 m above the Edersee at full dam). A forest adventure trail leads to the treetop path. On this "squirrel path", the "forest ecosystem" is presented with the help of several adventure stations. The construction of the canopy path by a private investor cost around 1.5 million euros[2]. The entire facility is barrier-free and therefore accessible for prams and wheelchairs.

  • Entrance fees: Adults: € 7.90 (combined ticket with wildlife park and National Park Center: adults: € 15.90, children: € 8.90); Discount for groups. Free entry for children under four years of age and for kindergarten groups with an educator.
  • Opening hours: Summer season from the beginning of April to the end of October: daily 10 am-6pm (May-Sep. Until 7pm); general admission up to 1 hour before closing; Closures due to weather conditions possible in bad weather (as of 04-2016)
  • Arrival & parking - From Hemfurth drive in the direction of the wildlife park and then on the access road to the wildlife park follow the signs to the parking lot at the entrance to the Baumkronenweg (at 22 . For information on how to get there, see also the travel information from the section on Wildlife park above.

Aseler Bridge and "Edersee-Atlantis"

Der Schlammling: specialist in floodplains
The inconspicuous plant with its small white flowers quickly colonizes the mud flats in the empty Edersee. The muddy is optimally adapted to its extreme location. It only takes a couple of weeks from the seeds to germinate and bloom to the formation of new seeds. The seeds, on the other hand, can lie under water for a very long time without losing their ability to germinate. The flowering time of the 5 to max. 10 cm tall plant is between July and October. The protected species is very rare and is on the red list. On the other hand, it occurs in quite large numbers at its occurrence on the Edersee. Mud flats can be found in the Edersee z. B. on the path in the Seegrund, which leads from the north from the old Aseler cemetery to the Aseler bridge. For more information see also Wikipedia article "Muddy"

Aseler Bridge

In late autumn and winter, the dam often releases the Aseler bridge and other remains of old buildings in the lake. The bridge dives from you Water level from below 233 m.

For more information see www.fledermauslehrpfad.de.

To go biking

B. in trockenen Teilen Südwestdeutschlands (z. B. Rheinhessen).
