Frankenberg (Eder) - Frankenberg (Eder)

Frankenberg (Eder)

Frankenberg (Eder) is a worth seeing city in North Hesse at the transition to Central Hesse. who Winterberg, Bad Wildungen or Marburg This small town, which lies to the left and right of the Eder and has a very beautiful historic town hall, should not be overlooked.

background

town hall

The first settlement or fortress on the mountain was probably a settlement of the Franks who wanted to secure their transport route, a kind of wine route, against the Saxons. When the Saxon Wars (820) came to an end, the meaning was lost. In 1122 the castle hill, on which unfortunately no castle can be seen today (today a small park, in which there is an occasional open air event), became the property of the Landgrave of Thuringia. The city was built east of the castle. The city, which now consisted of the old and new town, flourished for a short time. In 1376 the citizens rebelled against the lord of the castle and burned the castle down. The next big fire happened in 1476 and the city's heyday was over. The town hall was relocated to the stone house that still exists, as it had survived the great fire.

mobility

Map of Frankenberg (Eder)

Frankenberg's old town can be easily explored on foot; the core of the old town is at the end of the uphill pedestrian zone. Most of the old town streets are accessible by car, but the narrow streets are not designed for through traffic. If you want to discover Frankenberg in detail on foot, it makes sense, e.g. free of charge down on the banks of the Eder on the so-called small weir pasture 4 Weir pasture or on the other side of the ridge in the large car park in front of the 5 Ederberglandhalle to park. But there are also parking spaces in the upper town; these are chargeable.

Mobility and accessibility: Frankenberg has increasingly adapted to the needs of wheelchair users in recent years. Sidewalks have been lowered or - as in the entire pedestrian zone - have completely disappeared. Those who are fit can make it from the train station through the pedestrian zone to the half-timbered town hall on Obermarkt in 15-20 minutes.

There are also parking spaces in front of and behind the former Cistercian monastery, which now houses the local history museum and the district office. (50 cents per hour).

trips

Frankenberg is an excellent starting point for many beautiful excursions. Please read on the pages of Wikivoyage and on external sites:

But there are also beautiful excursion destinations and regional hiking trails in the immediate vicinity:

  • On the other side of the Eder and opposite the old town is the urban wildlife park. The Ederhöhenweg, a well-known hiking trail, runs partly through the park.
  • The charming is located near Ellershausen (Frankenau) Lengeltal, also called the valley of the mills. During the week the 520 bus stops in Ellershausen; on weekends you can take the 520 to Frankenau and from there take the shared taxi.

Frankenberg and its surroundings are part of the tourist region Ederbergland. Apart from the stretch from Frankenberg to Edersee, some cycle paths may be too difficult for inexperienced cyclists and amateur cyclists. With the use of regional bus lines and trains can organize bike trips. Two suggestions:

  • By train to Wiesenfeld (Frankenberg-Marburg route) and from there down into the Lahn valley to Marburg. You drive 32 km first on the Lahn-Eder cycle path and switches to the in Sarnau Lahn valley cycle path. Both cycle paths are very well signposted. Since almost the entire Lahn-Eder cycle path is accompanied by the train, nearby train stations are also possible. In Marburg there are inexpensive bicycle boxes near the parking garage on the Pilgrimstein (24 hours, 1 euro). The return journey takes the same train line from Marburg main station. Bicycles can be carried free of charge.
  • On weekends and Sundays and public holidays from April to October bicycles (Timetable (PDF)) are carried. This allows for a day trip on the Eder cycle path. You can go up Hatzfeld drive and join the Eder cycle path (to Frankenberg train station approx. 30 km). Other places to Hatzfeld an der Eder and thus on the Eder cycle path, which are approached by the 520, include 1 Holzhausen and Dodenau. Except for a few hills, the Eder cycle path runs leisurely downhill from there to Frankenberg. Hesse cycle route planner . A group of cyclists should register in advance if they want to travel on line 520.
