Central Hesse is an extremely varied region that has been culturally connected for centuries. From the fertile soils of the Wetterau to the bare and sparsely populated Vogelsberg to the Lahn and Dill valleys and the wooded foothills of the Westerwald, the region offers pretty much all types of landscape.
Central Hesse, as it is culturally defined, is not identical in all details to the administrative unit of Central Hesse. So the foothills of the Vogelsberg range with the residence town Birstein up to the Kinzig valley while slot in the valley of the Fulda already closed East Hesse belongs.
Gießen is the cultural center of Central Hesse with its university, Wetzlar is mainly industrial (e.g. by the large companies Buderus and Leica). Also worth seeing are Limburg as the cathedral city, the once important spa town of Bad Nauheim and Marburg with its well-preserved historic old town.
language
Especially in the rural areas of the Vogelsberg and the Wetterau, a strong dialect can often be heard, which is characterized by a tendency to dark vowels formed in the back of the palate. Other features are labial sounds and the rolling "r". Already for Hessen from the urban area Rhine Main Area Understanding can become a challenge if the Upper Hesse does not show any linguistic understanding. English is not widespread in some villages among the older population. Otherwise there is a great variety of languages to be found, also shaped by the university towns of Gießen and Marburg.
