Alsfeld is a city in Hesse in the administrative district to water.
background
The city was first mentioned in a document in 1069. In the Middle Ages, Alsfeld was on one of the most important trade routes, the so-called "road through the short Hessen". Thus the city became an important market and minting place. Alsfeld was granted town charter in 1222 and continued to develop into a prosperous town. This boom came to an abrupt end only after the destruction in the Thirty Years' War.
With increasing industrialization in the 19th century and the return to monument protection, the city experienced a slight upswing. The city of Alsfeld was named a European model city in 1975 for its efforts to protect historical monuments. Today it is one of the most important and worth seeing half-timbered cities with the world-famous town hall.

(IATA: FRA) is about 120 km south and can be reached via the A5 motorway.
By train
Alsfeld has a connection to the national rail network via the Gießen - Fulda branch line. If you want to travel by ICE, the best way to get there is via Fulda. The 1 Alsfeld train station is about 500 m west of the city center.

- Half-timbered town hall Alsfeld. The town hall (1512-1516) is one of the most important German half-timbered town halls. A two-storey half-timbered construction rises on the narrow floor plan of the late Gothic stone basement, which once served as a market hall with its pointed arches. Strong wood, grooved beam heads and curved corner struts characterize the early frame construction, which is a happy combination of stone architecture and timber construction. On the gable side there are flat central bay windows, in the south-eastern one, a new type of strut, the "Alsfeld strut", appears for the first time in Alsfeld. The year 1512 can be found under this bay window. The mayor's offices are still on the first floor. On the second floor there is a meeting room and registry office room, which used to be a courtroom, as indicated by the magnificent renaissance door by Alsfeld carpenter Michael Finck (1604) with the inlay work depicting Justitia. Master Johann was commissioned in 1514 to build the half-timbered structure on the stone plinth. The year 1516 was found in the attic, the upper floor was not completed until 1591 and 1604. The town hall is the unmistakable landmark of Alsfeld.

Berchtaweg
A feeder path from Alsfeld (length: 8 km) leads to the Berfa district, located on the southern slope of the Bechtelsberg. It goes on the circular route
straight to the summit of the former "Hessian Blocksberg", which according to tradition was a Celtic place of sacrifice and court. The Berchtaweg (length: 7.5 km) leads past some legendary places, such as the basalt cone "Rumpelskuppe" and the "Hexenkaute". Here sometimes a "figure of light" appeared, the goddess of fertility Berchta, who gave the mountain its name, as the stories and legends of the past tell it.
The park-like summit plateau offers a wonderful all-round view of the Hessian low mountain range, with a clear view as far as the Sauerland, the Kellerwald nature park and to the south as far as the peaks of the Rhön and Vogelsberg.

In addition to the Berchtaweg there is a large number of hiking and cycling trails around Alsfeld. One of the highlights is the one inaugurated on the occasion of the Luther Year 2017 Lutherweg between Eisenach and Worms. This also leads from Bad Hersfeld via Grebenau and the district of Eifa through the old town of Alsfeld towards Romrod. This pilgrimage route is based on the route of Martin Luther to the Reichstag to Worms and back to the Wartburg. Alsfeld is a station on the Luther Trail.
