The 675 m high Desert garden is the highest elevation in Kellerwald.

Its summit is crowned by a 28 m high observation tower, so that the hiker can reach the 700 mark. From up here you have a wonderful panoramic view.

The desert garden is the main peak of the ridge High basement, to which its northeastern secondary peaks Hunsrück (636 m) and Sauklippe (584 m) belong. The Kellerwald Tower is open again since May 2010, as the tower's stability was certified in a new report in spite of the remaining construction defects. However, only a maximum of 15-20 people are allowed to enter the entire tower. [1]

background

People were already active on the mountain in pre-Christian times. On the summit are the remains of a large Celtic rampart from the Iron Age in the 1st millennium BC. To find.

In 1475 the desert garden was first mentioned as the "desert garden".

In 1971 an 18 m high observation tower was built on the mountain.

This was replaced in 2003 by a 28 m high larch wood tower. The tower, officially inaugurated on May 9, 2004, has 123 steps.

Between 2008 and 2010 the tower was closed due to construction defects. With a new building report, the stability was then certified to the extent that a maximum of 15 people are allowed on the structure.

Tower of the DWD weather radar Dreieich-Offenthal in the Rhine-Main area

Proposed solution for the tower problem: As of 12-2013, the construction of a 60 m high tower for a weather radar of the German Meteorological Service is planned (rain radar). This structure is to be provided with a viewing platform. The project is currently in the nature conservation examination. If the new radar tower were to come 200 m away from the current wooden tower, the wooden tower would be demolished when the new observation platform under the weather radar went into operation.[2]

Background for the new Weather radar on the Hohen Keller is that the current weather radar near Flechtdorf northwest of Korbach in connection with the planned wind power development can no longer continue to operate without interference. At the moment there are height restrictions for many wind farms and new development areas at Flechtdorf in order not to impair the operation of the rain radar. Therefore the weather service is looking for a new location for this radar. If the radar were to hit the desert garden, several problems would be solved at the same time:

  • The desert garden has a new, permanently stable observation tower.
  • The weather radar has a new location where it can be operated permanently despite more wind turbines in the region.
  • Well-suited wind priority areas northwest of Korbach can be developed economically for wind power, as the height restriction is no longer applicable. Furthermore, the systems at existing wind power locations can be exchanged for larger ones with a multiple coefficient of performance (compared to the existing ones). This is another important contribution to the (regional) energy transition.

With the new "Wüstegarten" weather radar location, several important problems could be solved at the same time.

The current rain radar data for Hessen you can z. B well on the side of the View HR. There is also an app for the smartphone here. So you are always well informed, especially when it is rainy weather, whether you should take a break in the next refuge.

getting there

View of the desert garden from the road to Battenhausen

By train

There is no train station directly on the mountain. The nearest train station with long-distance traffic is Schwalmstadt-Treysa, the nearest regional train station is (Neuental-) Zimmerrode. It is therefore advisable to use the combination of bike and train. Sporty cyclists can ride up the gravel road until shortly before the summit.

In the street

  • From the north (from Kassel) on the A 49 to the end of the autobahn at Neuental. From here drive towards Jesberg or Oberurff-Schiffelborn.
  • From the south (from Marburg) turn left on the B 3 in Gilserberg and drive via Moischeid to Schönstein, alternatively follow the B 3 to Jesberg or Oberurff-Schiffelborn.

mobility

Hiking map desert garden

The top of the mountain is only accessible on foot. Anyone who is fit on a bike can experience the mountain almost to the top via driveways.

Ascents to the Kellerwald Tower:

  • Shortest footpath from Densberg - Starting point: parking lot Basement hats at the edge of the forest north of 1 Densberg (In the center of Jesberg, turn right or left when coming from Schönstein, the path is signposted). From there it is about 3 km to the tower (about 320 m) via the steeply rising hiking trail D 1.
  • More comfortable ascent2 Haddenberg - Starting point: Sattel on the country road above Haddenberg. From here you can easily walk about 3.5 km to the tower (with approx. 230 m) via driveways and a hiking trail
  • From3 Dodenhausen - via the hiking trail X 13 (approx. 3.8 km easy with approx. 300 m)
  • From Mountain freedom - The hiking trail X 16 (Lullus path) to the ridge. From here on the Kellerwaldsteig (marking K) to the tower (approx. 5.5 km easy with approx. 400 m)
  • From Oberurff-Schiffelborn - From the bathing pond (parking lot) below the Löwenstein ruins, follow the Kellerwaldsteig (marker K) to the desert garden (approx. 6.0 km easy with approx. 450 m).
  • From Jesberg - From the parking lot at the Kellerwaldhalle (located on the outskirts towards Densberg) via the hiking trail X 16 to the ridge. From here on the Kellerwaldsteig (marking K) to the tower (approx. 7.0 km easy with approx. 450 m)

Tourist Attractions

The Kellerwald Tower
  • Kellerwald Tower - Whoever climbs the 123 steps of the new Kellerwald Tower opens up a splendid panoramic view of large parts of northern Hesse. A shelter with benches is integrated in the tower below. Here information boards provide information about flora and fauna as well as the geology of the cellar forest. The 28 m high tower is freely accessible. Due to construction defects, it is currently only allowed to be climbed by a maximum of 15 to 20 people at the same time. Cracks had appeared on load-bearing glued wood trusses. From April 2009 to May 2010 the tower was completely closed. After a new report attested his stability, he is usable again to a limited extent (for a maximum of 15-20 people at the same time). It is not known when the damage will be repaired (as of May 2010). In a legal dispute between the client (the Kellerwald-Edersee Nature Park) and the general contractor, according to the report, the damage amount to 100,000 euros. [3][4]
  • Exhelmerstein - The rock cliff with the summit cross is on the western slope of the desert garden. The view is overgrown by trees.
  • Forest hillside moor - The slope moor east of the Hunsrück secondary peak was only rediscovered a few years ago. A description is here to be found (see section Hoher Kellerwald). Location: 51 ° 1 ′ 31 ″ N.9 ° 6 ′ 48 ″ E
