Fritzlar is an attractive small town in North Hesse at the Eder. The half-timbered old town with a cathedral and a largely preserved city wall is well worth seeing.

Fritzlar is a medium-sized economic center in the Schwalm-Eder district in North Hesse. The origins of the city go back to a church and monastery founded by Bonifatius. The cathedral and imperial city is one of the germ cells of the Christianization of central and northern Germany, but also of the medieval German Empire. The name of the city derives from the original name Friedeslar = place of peace from.

Fritzlar is known for its well-preserved medieval townscape with numerous half-timbered houses and a largely preserved town wall that surrounds the medieval town center. Important buildings are the Fritzlar Cathedral and the oldest town hall in Germany, which was mentioned in a document in 1109.

With the ICE or regional express to Wobble. Get on the diesel railcar in the direction of Bad Wildungen, or take a direct train from Kassel (every 2 hours).

The station is south of the Eder. From here it is a 1.3 km walk to the market square in the old town (over the Eder bridge on Gießenerstraße and through Fraumünsterstraße).

By bus

  • 1  Fritzlar bus station. The bus station is centrally located on the northern edge of the old town. You walk 250 m through the pedestrian zone (Kasseler Straße to the market square.

A remote bus connection exists via Magdeburg to Berlin.

Fritzlar is very well integrated into the regional bus network. From Kassel city center you can reach Fritzlar directly with the express bus line 500. That also applies Bad Wildungen, because this is where line 500 ends.

By boat

  • The Eder is for larger boats not navigable. But the river is popular with canoes. In some cases, however, weirs have to be moved. Boats can e.g. B. be rented here.

The best way to explore the old town of Fritzlar is on foot. Parking is available on the northern edge of the old town in the streets "Allee" and "Am grau Turm".

  • 1  Fritzlar Cathedral. After the completion of extensive renovation work, the cathedral has been accessible again since December 2012.Open: Mon-Fri 9 a.m.-5 p.m., Sat 9 a.m.-4 p.m., Sun and public holidays 12 p.m.-4 p.m.
  • Remains of the city wall - The weir system is still largely preserved. A defense tower that Gray tower, can be climbed as a viewing tower for an admission fee (€ 2.00) (open between April and October daily from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. and from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.)
  • Boniface Monument - stands opposite the cathedral on Domplatz. If you take a closer look at the sculpture, you will notice that, according to the monument, Bonifatius probably felled the oak more "professionally" with a chainsaw. In his hand, however, he holds an ax that is historically appropriate.

In the valley, in the Mühlengraben area, there are two other beautiful old town views:

  • 2 Painter's angle at the Heilig-Geistkapelle and at
  • 3 Four towers view at the Mainzer Ring.
  • 4 Züschen stone chamber grave - A little east of the village of Züschen belonging to Fritzlar, on the L3218, there is a stone chamber grave from the 4th to 3rd millennium BC. The prehistoric megalithic complex is a so-called gallery grave. It is considered to be one of the most important examples of its kind.

The museum for prehistory and early history, folklore and city history is located in the wedding house, a stately half-timbered building from around 1580-1590.   • To go biking - e.g. B. over the Eder cycle path to Edertalsperre. The flat valley section runs largely traffic-free along the Eder. It's about 20 km easy to get to the barrier.
  • Visit of the Eder-Auen adventure pool - spacious, heated outdoor pool.

Festivals

  • Fritzlar horse market - For over 130 years, the Fritzlarer horse market has been taking place for four days from the 2nd Thursday in July, a mixture of horse market, fair and trade exhibition - and one of the largest folk festivals in North Hesse.
  • Imperial Festival - Since 2008, the Kaiserfest has been held every two years on the third weekend in August. A medieval spectacle in the entire city center in memory of the times when the emperors liked to hold meetings in Fritzlar in central Germany.
  • Christmas Market - The Christmas market in Fritzlar's old town around the market square always takes place on the second weekend in Advent.
  • Rock in one piece - The open-air metal and rock festival on the festival site On the Lohrberg in the Geismar district has been enjoying increasing popularity for years, the next date is July 20th, 2018[outdated] .
  • Advent in the courtyards - There is a special Christmas market on the third weekend of Advent. Spread over the old town, numerous courtyards and some buildings serve as small Christmas market islands with handicraft stalls, food and drink and often musical performances. The locations are visited one after the other in a tour.
