From the founding years of the city in the 13th century, parts of the town hall vault, the tower (defensive tower) of the old town church or the partially preserved city fortifications, which at that time consisted of an approximately 5 m high wall with battlements and ditches in front of it, date from the founding years of the city.

The “Sleeping Beauty Castle” in today's district also dates from the 13th century Sababurg, which Landgrave Wilhelm I had expanded into a hunting lodge and stud from 1490. At the foot of the Sababurg, Landgrave Wilhelm IV founded the Sababurg zoo in 1571, which was one of the first in Europe belonged to.

In the second half of the 17th century, Landgrave Carl von Hessen-Kassel also settled French religious refugees (Huguenots) in the city of Hofgeismar France lost their homes in 1685. On February 22nd, 1686, a French Reformed community was founded in Hofgeismar.

In the following years Huguenot settlements were founded in the vicinity of Hofgeismar, such as Carlsdorf (1686), Kelze and Schöneberg (both 1699) and Friedrichsdorf (1775). The well-preserved Huguenot churches in these districts can still be visited today.

In the 18th century, the town of Hofgeismar and the Gesundbrunnen district rose to become a seaside resort. The buildings around the mineral spring are reminiscent of this to this day. As early as the Thirty Years War, the source of the "Gesundbrunnen" is said to have been discovered by a wounded soldier and brought him the hoped-for healing. The Schönburg castle in the Gesundbrunnen park ("Montcherie", built 1787-1789 in a classicist style based on plans by Simon Louis du Ry) was originally the residence of Landgrave Wilhelm IX. von Hessen-Kassel (from 1803: Elector Wilhelm I) during his stays in the summer months and is now home to the Evangelical Academy Hofgeismar.

Mare's wake festival

The traditional one, which is celebrated every year Mare's wake festival goes back to the following legend from 1428. After the death of Heinrich II. Von Schöneberg, the last knight of Hofgeismar, his widow had their only son trained by an educator, the court master. However, when the widow did not reciprocate the educator's love, he murdered the eleven-year-old boy and said he had lost him on a horse ride on the Wednesday before Easter in 1428. After all of Hofgeismar's citizens had helped find the boy, a child found the boy's cap in the castle well, whereupon the body was brought up and the steward hanged. With the legacy of distributing awakenings to the children every year, the widow bequeathed the entire inheritance of the city. Today two Stuteweckenlieder have been handed down that workers at the Stuteweckenfest received wood and fabrics, the city council and the clergy received a bacon cake breakfast and each school class received a bucket of beer in addition to the Wecken.
