background
The legend of the devil's pulpit
Once upon a time, many, many years ago, the witches and warlocks as well as the devil met on Walpurgis Night Chunks in the resin. During the festival, the devil gave a speech on a rock in which he boasted of his strength and insulted the witches. After the boast, the witches asked him if he was ready to put his strength to the test. "Of course," he agreed immediately, cockily. "Can you see the rock you're standing on by Hohen Meissner wear it without taking it off "he was asked." No problem, I'll do it with my left hand. "This is how you agreed the bet.
After the festival, the devil shouldered the rock and rose into the air. At first everything went well, but above that Eichsfeld he got weaker and weaker. At the Höheberg on the Werra, nothing worked anymore - although it was only a stone's throw from the Hohen Meissner was. The master of hell landed and paused. After a short time he fell asleep. However, since the witches were suspicious, they sent some observers after the devil. Their distrust was confirmed at the Werra, because there they found the sleeping devil. A witch called to the sleeper: "Well, you lazy, what's going on?" The devil woke up frightened. The witches laughed at him. Embarrassed and caught, he stamped his foot on the ground with his hoof on his foot. Then he disappeared.
The impression of the horseshoe in which the Werra now flows can still be clearly seen from above. When the people learned about the story, they called the rock that remained on the Höheberg "Teufelskanzel".
