Helsa is a community in Hesse in the district of Kassel. The place has about 5,600 inhabitants, it consists of the districts Eschenstruth, Helsa, St. Ottilien and Wickenrode.
background
It is believed that Helsa was created with the establishment of the neighboring Kaufungen monastery in 1017 by Empress Kunigunde. The place was first mentioned by name in documents in 1353.

By train
With long-distance transport to Kassel-Wilhelmshöhe long-distance train station. There is a connection to tram line 4, which runs to Helsa (journey time around 45 minutes).
In the street
The A 7 motorway leave at the Kassel-Ost junction. Via the federal road 7 you can reach via Kaufungen finally Helsa.

The two identical cycle paths run through Helsa Herkules-Wartburg cycle path and Lossetal cycle path.

Tourist Attractions
- Beautiful half-timbered buildings in the historic center of the village
- 1 Nikolaikirche. The church with its striking defensive tower was probably built at the end of the 13th century to the middle of the 14th century. The exact year of construction is unknown.
- 2 Historic mill wheel Helsa. The new water wheel was attached to the old village mill in 1988. It is modeled on the historical wheel and sits in the same place. The new wheel has been generating electrical energy since 1991. The association "Historisches Mühlrad Helsa e.V." leads tours to the mill and through Helsa on request by (Info & contact). Location: The water wheel is in the area of the old Dorfstrasse (Leipziger Strasse 70) and is probably freely accessible. However, detailed information is not available.
Out of town
- 3 Mountain lakes on the Michelskopf - The lakes are about 480 m above sea level on the mountain of the same name about 2.5 km west of Helsa. From Helsa you have to walk around 200 meters in altitude through the forest to this beautiful, but somewhat remote excursion destination. Several lakes have formed in the former basalt quarries. The largest lake (100 x 300 m) is often used for swimming. Allegedly cell phones should not work at the lakes. [1]

- hike - e.g. B. to the Steinkopf lakes mentioned above. An attractive destination for a day hike from Helsa is the Bilstein with its observation tower and snack bar Kaufunger Forest, or a hike on the Grimmsteig.
- To go biking - In the valley of the Losse z. B. the half-timbered town Kaufungen a nice touring destination (about 5 km easy on the Herkules-Wartburg cycle path and the Lossetal cycle path along the country road).
