The High grass is the highest point of the Habichtswaldes and the city kassel. Centrally located in the high Habichtswald, the summit is an attractive hiking destination. The mountain belongs to the Habichtswald Nature Park.
background
geography
Although the tall grass at 615 m is the highest point in the Habichtswald, the mountain is rather inconspicuous. Seen from a distance, the summit in the silhouette of the mountains is difficult or impossible to make out. Together with Essigberg and Großem Steinhaufen, the summit, a slightly undulating high plateau, forms the summit region of the Hohen Habichtswald.
climate
Climatically it is usually 3 - 5 degrees cooler up here and a stronger wind blows than in the nearby Kassel Basin, which is more than 400 m lower. When you have climbed the tower (up to about 645 m) you are even a good 500 m higher than the Kassel Karlsaue, which is only 140 m above sea level.

By bus and train
The tall grass is easy to reach from Kassel by public transport.
The next ICE stop is the long-distance train station in Kassel Wilhelmshöhe.
From there, take tram line 4 to the end of the line in the Druseltal. There is a connection to bus line 22. This goes to both the Herkules and the Hohe Gras.

From Kassel, the Druseltal - Habichtswald-Ehlen road opens up the Habichtswald. At the top of the road, turn left to the tall grass (the junction is signposted). There is a parking lot for hikers right next to the observation tower, which can be used free of charge.
On foot
The Hohe Gras is a beautiful hiking destination in the high Habichtswald. You can hike the mountain from many points.

Observation tower
The foundation stone for the tower was laid in May 1888. In spring 1890, the 24.7 m high tower was inaugurated after almost two years of construction. The excursion restaurant went into operation in November 1904. In 1925 the tower was completely renovated for the first time. World War II also left damage to the tower that had to be removed. In 1969 the tower was raised by 3 m with an architecturally unsuitable structure and provided with an antenna. The last renovation of the building took place between 1985 and 87. The property has been owned by the Hessisch-Waldeckischer Gebirgsverein Kassel since 1929.
The key to the observation tower can be obtained from the restaurant on request. From the tower you can see the distant low mountain range in the area when the visibility is good. The close-up view is obscured by the trees and the flat slope of the mountain. The ascent to the tower is still worthwhile. Distance boards on the viewing platform help with orientation. Incidentally, the transmission system is operated by Hessischer Rundfunk.

Winter sports
A ski lift is in operation on the mountain in winter. The lift opens up a 510 m long slope with an altitude difference of 80 m. The slope can be covered with snow. A snowcat is available to prepare the descent. There is also one in the lower area of the ski lift 200 m long toboggan slope.
